let's hope that more publishers will follow this initiative. let's also hope they adopt a sensible pricing and format policy. and since i'm in the mood to be wildly optimistic, let's hope they think twice before adding drm. in any case, it's good news, and i particularly love the bit about the exploding ebook sales.

Let's hope by "digitize" they don't mean scan to PDF without OCR... or scan and OCR without proof reading and then selling badly formatted books.

But, alas that is what I expect to happen. It seems that most books written before perhaps the mid 90s were not in electronic form to start with.

We'll have to wait and see.

Well, their ebook format FAQ shows a nice list of the supported formats, so I think we can assume it will not just be PDF. On the other hand, the list does not include Kindle, so it may be out of date, or perhaps they just roll that into the MobiPocket category. The information is recent enough to list the Sony. Even if they do support other formats, though, hopefully they will put the books through a proper quality check before release. Once upon a time, such a step would be an assumption, rather than just a fond hope...

Interesting tidbit, though again this could be out of date, they note eReader as their top-selling format. Anyone know of any other publishers that release that information?

i've sent them an email inquiring about epub (not listed, although they do say they support "all of the commercially available eBook formats in the marketplace. We generally publish all of our eBooks in all of the available formats" so it may just be that their list is not up to date), and about their drm policy : they mention their audio books are drm-free, but no work about ebooks. so i thought i'd bring it up. i'll let you know if i get a response.

I've just come across this article in Treehugger, another outfit interested in the benefits of e-books. A related poll... Do you read e-books?... presents a lot of the same-old same-old comments.

I've left one comment in today's article, regarding the ongoing debate as to the efficiency of e-book reading vs public libraries...
