Waterstones put a lot more book shops out of business than Amazon ever will.

Convenience.
It is quicker, simpler and safer to buy a book from Amazon than to find the illegal copy.
That is the point of going after MegaUpload, TPB and so on, to make it more and more difficult to find the illegal copy.

Some people do. The latest Bowker survey revealed 19% read an ebook but only 11% bought one. Where did those 8% get their ebooks? Public domain, free, library, lending ... yes. But some most likely by unauthorized downloading.

Would you do your job for donations?

James Daunt is an idiot. If what he was trying to say was true, it would have been an issue long about with pBooks. It's not an issue then and it's not an issue now.

And once again the latest file sharing study concludes that illegal downloading in fact increases sales. This, of course, is the actual overall consensus of independent research, rather than what the OP would like it to be.

This "independent" research is as "independent" as the industry sponsored ones. All we do know is that actual music sales have increased in France after the introduction of the three-strikes law.

I conclude with an investigation of the distributional effects of file sharing on sales and find that file sharing benefits more established and popular artists but not newer and smaller artists.
Quote:
If an album leaks a month in advance of its release date, it can sell 60 additional units.
If the 60 addl sales occur with the more popular artists, how can he determine 60 more out of the millions sold?

By a tiny fraction of the cost of Hadopi to French tax payers, and only on iTunes (an American company). I would be surprised if the law isn't scrapped within the next year by the new president.

Donations was just an example. You ignored the other two for some reason. And if authors make the donation option available on their website, that means that they want donations.

But without any connection to it. In 2009 music sales increased in many countries.
