I usually bring a print magazine, too, for such times.

Pfft. Show the person next to him juggling 5 Michener-sized paperback books, and the ten minutes the reader has to be off doesn't seem like such a big deal.

I bring a magazine because I tend to not read 'em much and they stack up. My husband and I are stuck buying magazines to help school-age nieces and nephews with fundraising, lol.

pendragginp: Airplane mode is only for when you're in flight. The FAA rules say that, if it's electronic, and you're either taking off or landing, the device needs to be off, period. And it's not the fault of the airlines. The FAA made that rule. Same with the "no phones while flying" rule. Although that one isn't because of any interference the phones might cause. It's to stop annoying cell phone users from driving everyone on the plane insane.

I always get window seats (and if I can't reserve one, I can usually swap with the person next to me) ... I'm a chronic window-looker-outer. Even though I always have reading matter of some form with me, I generally only read if it's too cloudy to see anything on the ground and I've gotten bored with the cloud tops, which isn't common, or if it's a redeye and I'm too caffeinated to fall asleep.

I really thought that Airplane Mode meant you could keep your reader on when other such things had to go off. Good thing you told me, they would have been hustling me off to the pokey! |

Although the FAA makes the rules, they most often do so at the request of the airlines-so it's incorrect to claim that "it's not the fault of the airlines".
I'm not real sure why the airlines are in this issue, but since they lie about nearly all the other rules they claim are 'forced' on them by the FAA, I'm sure they're lying about this one too. Most likely they want to be sure you'll spend at least a half-hour/flight reading their sales brochure. Or maybe it's just that they get their rocks off by annoying their customers. |

I find a newspaper or magazine covers me for the 15-20 mins when you aren't allowed to use elctronic devices, although a couple of times with my e-ink reader I have actually forgotten it wasn't just a book and kept reading and nobody has mentioned anything, maybe they seem less obviously electronic than laptops etc.
