Nope.. Not at all. Look at this...

1. The Name of the Wind (Book #1) by Patrick Rothfuss -9.57 with ~44,000 Votes
2. A Game of Thrones (Book #1) by George R.R. Martin - 9.36 with ~142,000 Votes
3. The Fellowship of the Ring (Book #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien - 9.34 with ~500,000 Votes
4. The Way of Kings (Book #1) by Brandon Sanderson - 9.31 with ~12,000 Votes
5. The Lies of Locke Lamora (Book #1) by Scott Lynch - 9.19 with ~13,000 Votes
6. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - 9.18 with ~580,000 Votes

The first book has a higher rating with less then half the votes of #2. So why have the rating when the rating does not correspond with the votes? And if you look at the others in the first 6, the rating is worthless. I know what the rating is, but this is a voted on list, not a rated list.

I believe the list is compiled from user ratings on amazon, etc. 12,000 ratings still seems like a decent sample size, to me. Although Rothfuss would definitely not top my personal list.

Why not use Goodreads instead of Amazon? I believe there are more reviews on Goodreads.

Meh.

I wish the blog would have stated its methodology (the one at the bottom of the page is insufficient) and its sources.

This is a great place to gather new authors for me to read. I have just begun with fantasy and this is really going to be a handy place for me to hang out when I am not reading!! Thanks

Epic fantasy list

Yours is a good list - it doesn't begin with Lord of the Rings - and I'm sure you've read or heard about Raven's Shadow (Book #1) by Anthony Ryan. Why haven't you included this in the list? Though Ryan is a relatively new author, this first book is call-in-sick good. If you haven't read this, maybe you should wait til Book 2 is out (maybe by January 2013), so that you don't have to keep rereading Book 1.

Historically myopic.

Poul Anderson's _The Broken Sword_ has to be on any such list, and you have to have Lord Dunsany and William Morris and a number of other historical authors for it to be meaningful.

Title the list, ``50 contemporary best-selling / popular books which are more or less fantasy and including a lot of Extruded Fantasy Product (EFP) and are highly rated on Amazon.com'' and it would at least be accurately described.

If I had my way, new authors would have to "prove" themselves with a certain number of completely stand-alone, successful novels before being permitted to start cashing in on the "latest installment that starts in the middle and ends in the middle" dance.

There's nothing as enjoyable as investing the time reading four or five huge books by an author before discovering that they're really only good at avoiding having to write an ending.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. The first book is The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights if you're in the UK).

Currently most popular is not equal to the best. I don't like this list, or any other similar ones constructed this way.

Same here. The list title ought to be "Some Good Fantasy Books Released the Last Few Years and One or Two Older Ones Chucked in For Good Measure".

Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander is a must for any "best of Fantasy" list.
