Biggers, Earl Derr: Seven Keys To Baldpate. v1. 5 Feb 2013
Earl Derr Biggers (August 24, 1884 – April 5, 1933) was an American novelist and playwright. He is remembered primarily for adaptations of his novels, especially those featuring the Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan.
Excerpt A young woman was crying bitterly in the waiting-room of the railway station at Upper Asquewan Falls, New York. A beautiful young woman? That is exactly what Billy Magee wanted to know as, closing the waiting-room door behind him, he stood staring just inside. Were the features against which that frail bit of cambric was agonizingly pressed of a pleasing contour? The girl's neatly tailored corduroy suit and her flippant but charming millinery augured well. Should he step gallantly forward and inquire in sympathetic tones as to the cause of her woe? Should he carry chivalry even to the lengths of Upper Asquewan Falls? It was also the basis of a movie some yrs back, "House of the Long Shadows" in which Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, and John Carradine were some of the actors.

Yep. The original film based on the book is still extant too. It's a silent movie starring George M. Cohan of musical fame. It's over at the Internet Archive.

Today Amazon recommended to me a DVD set with three movie versions of this. So I'll read the book instead. Thanks Charlie!
