I remember at one point they were all in the Kindle store. Then they were pulled and notices were that they would be back shortly. That was a couple of years ago.

EDIT: It seems they are in the Kindle Store now and I missed the article said this was for the U.K.

Yes, this is one of those cases where the books have different US and UK publishers. The US publisher does eBooks; the UK publisher currently doesn't.

I believe Penguin UK does do ebooks - just not these. The Fleming Estate controls the electronic rights. Penguin UK wanted to do the ebooks, but the estate decided they could do better doing them themselves.

And they are probably right. James Bond is an icon and a global franchise. Most folks probably have at least a basic idea of who/what he is. He doesn't need to be sold - the movies take care of that, and I suspect a surge of backlist activity when a new Bond film comes out, and people get curious about the book it was based on.

Why have Penguin UK in the chain and taking a cut for the ebooks? Their presence doesn't offer anything of sufficient value to justify them getting a cut of the take.

The question is how good a job the estate will do on the electronic editions, which will come down to who they contract with to do the conversion.

Yup you can buy them in the US but they are ridiculously priced for me. Just under $10 for books that are reasonably old. I have them all in Paperback and a few in hardback. If they were priced at the $5 level I would probably buy them for my Kindle. (shrugs)

How many James Bond books are there? I know there are 14 by Ian Fleming but I recently saw a fairly new one by Sebastian Faulks called 'Devil May Care'. Is it kind of like the Bourne series where someone else writes James Bond books now?

It's been like that for some time. John Gardner wrote a bunch of them starting in the early 80s, then there have been several authors after him, including a kids line of books...

In Canada, Ian Fleming's James Bond series of novels are available from Penguin in paperback for $16 each. Amazon.ca has them for $11.58. Chapters (bricks and mortar) has them for $15.50.

But, also in Canada, I can buy the Kindle editions from Amazon.com for $9.58, published by "Ian Fleming Publications Ltd".

Ian Fleming died in 1964 and his books will be PD in Canada in 2015. Plus, as this author's heirs (whose rich uncle expired 45 years ago) have probably munched handily on the movies rights over the years ... is it any wonder the entire series is easily found on the darknet?

Given all this, which do you suppose I am going to buy?

It is pricing like this which drives bad behaviour in consumers. The Bond books ought to be released at $5 to $7 each and in new editions with fully corrected texts and some sort of extra content. I'd bet famous authors would line up round the block several times for the chance to be among the 14 chosen to write a 5000 word preface for their favourite Bond memory.

I liked Gardner's Bond up until he changed Bond into some type of weird economic based spy. Benson was doing a nice job with the franchise. Bond returned to being more dark and tormented.

Colonel Sun was very well done.

There's also "Young Bond"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Bond

And "The Adventures of James Bond Jr."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/003%C2%...es_Bond_Junior

Which seems to have been made into a cartoon...

While the Fleming family is probably doing okay, I don't think they get much of anything from the movies. I believe Fleming sold the film rights to Harry Saltzman, who was later bought out by his partner, Albert R. Broccoli. Since most of the new Bond movies are not connected to the original source material, I'm not sure how much money goes to the family.

I never realized about that Public Domain thing. That could be a be a very interesting issue in 5 years.

Thanks for that list Blue Tyson. I was really hoping for something like that. It amazes me how few of these are actually ebooks.

Thanks for the links as well JeremyR. I remember watching James Bond Jr. as a child. Sadly I dont remember if it was any good.

It's the reason Raymond Chandler is now PD in Canada. And Dashiell Hammett will be in 2012.

The works of Albert Camus, Nevil Shute and Boris Pasternak, each who died in 1960, become PD in 2011.

Also Vicki Baum of Grand Hotel, Emily Post (!), ???

See also: http://www.nndb.com/lists/470/000106152/

I wish I could find an easy Google way of finding authors, wiki, died 1960.
