Novels like Mushishi? Atmospheric mysteries?

Mushishi is a television series about a man wandering across medieval Japan and helping people who have strange problems caused by spirit-creatures called mushi.

About the show: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi

The show is very slow and quiet and episodic. It's all about mood and atmosphere. There is no real plot, just interesting character sketches of the people that the man helps, and the bizarre (medical) problems that the spirits cause.

I really like the show. Does anyone know of any novels like this? (Not the manga, thanks!)

Are you more interested in atmosphere or the spirits?

Not sure it's the same Musashi, but...may I recommend Musashi, by Eiji Yohikawa?

You may also find Chronicles of Tao, by Deng Ming-Dao, worth your while.

My thought would be another japanese series: Kino's Journey (Kino no tabi) by Keiichi Sigsawa, which follows a girl and her sentient motorcycle to different places. It is another series that focuses on the human condition in an episodic fashion.

Tokyopop had published the first book, but they have since dropped it, along with everything else.
