Oppenheim, E. Phillips: The Curious Quest. V1. 22 Jul 2012
ccEdward Phillips Oppenheim (October 22, 1866 – February 3, 1946), was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers .A best-selling author of novels, short stories, magazine articles, translations, and plays, Oppenheim published over 150 books. He is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre, his novels also range from spy thrillers to romance, but all have an undertone of intrigue.
Excerpt Bliss seated himself disconsolately in an easy-chair and resigned himself to wait with an ill grace which he took no particular pains to conceal. He was a very spoilt young man, and he was inclined to resent this treatment from a physician whom he was proposing to honour by his patronage. Each time the butler entered the room he half rose, expecting to hear his name called—and each time he was disappointed. It was not until his turn arrived that he was shown into the presence of the physician. This book was made into a movie starring a young Cary Grant. (And that was actually the 2nd version of the movie. There are actually over 40 movies based on this guy's books)
Basically the main character of the novel (a spoiled rich guy) makes a bet with a doctor that he can spend a year living without his money or connections. Very interesting look at working class London of 1919 Last edited by JeremyR; 08-01-2012 at 09:08 PM. |

i really loved this book. made imagine how pure love must have been at the time. That is love not influenced by riches but endures suffering through time till it gets better.
