column and text in it

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this, hope here ok.

So I was wondering if it is possible with the help of a plug in or having this in new calibre update. There is a plug in for choosing columns and fixing them, but is it possible to see all text in column then you hover over it with a cursor. This could be very handy then there are some books which have very long entry in a column while most have small so there is no point in making the column extra wide. I saw this feature in a lot of places and would really like it if it got implemented in calibre.

For example one book has a lot of tags or very long list of authors if it's an anthology or even format column with many formats (no sense in making it a very wide column). Some of the column's like that info can be seen in book details but you might have chosen not to show some of them and then the only way is to widen a column every time.

This would be done by making the tooltip value for the field in question equal to its contents. Probably not technically difficult, but what the side-effects might be I have no idea.

There is a downside to doing that. Having tooltips in a dense listing like the book list means that as you hover your mouse over entries, the tooltip pops up and obscures the next data in the next couple of rows. That's why there are no tooltips in the book list.

I was also wondering if it is possible to have one look and feel which would be smart and fix the column width to fit the text? Probably best only in a few main columns (as tags column and some other could make it messy) - title, series, author. So that these always fit into column - width gets adjusted (might be annoying in some cases so it should be something which you can turn on and off in look and fell or something like that).

I don't know I am just throwing ideas maybe some will stick

Don't know any technical stuff so don't know what is easy or hard to do and what downsides and upsides it might have.

Right click on the column headers and select restore default column layout. This will resize columns to fit (except tags).

Thanks for the answer. It helps a little with column widths. Messes with the sorting at the time and changes the font size (I had it larger), so not the best solution for this. It's not like it is very important, just nice to have something like this.
