I'm with you- I don't care to have my electronics branded with themes or whatnot, but I'm excited about the possibility of NOT being the only sony owner out there Seems everyone I know just thinks about kindle and nook, and I want them to discover the awesomeness that is sony.

Oh come on. Potter is clearly a rip-off of LOTR. Let me point out the similarities:
1) They both come in books. 2) They both come in MULTIPLE books. 3) They use words to describe people, places and events. 4) Even more suspiciously, they were both written in ENGLISH!!! Clearly, a rip-off. No really. You couldn't possibly have two fantasy books less alike than LOTR and HP... |

But you forgot to mention that the only reason the 'HP' books are now being released in ebook format is that Tolkien's books have been digital for some while now, need to keep the rip-off in sync. Last edited by Ashjuk; 06-24-2011 at 03:00 AM. |

talk about a can of worms. i'd feel dirty if i said hp was better than lotr, but they really serve two completely different purposes (hazy description ) and different audiences, i'd surmise.

Got to remember that jswingem comes from Texas so if it ain't got cowboys then it must be fantasy and that means LotR or a copy thereof...

Prove to us that HP is a LoTR rip-off. I bet you can't because it isn't true.

The author surely knows how to milk her franchise.

FAIL!
This is not milking her franchise. This is releasing her books as eBooks and giving people extra content to go with them. Look at how popular the paper copies and the movies are. Not to mention the audio books as well. It's a big deal that deserves a big roll-out and that's what we are getting. |

Why didn't she released it before? To not give people a choice. People bought the books. Now she allows ebooks to be sold. She knows many people will buy it again, to have read it in their favourite medium.
Selling the same product twice. Nice. |

And your problem is what... people deciding to spend their own money on something they choose to purchase, nobody is forcing you (or anybody) to buy... I have many books in paper and e-format... my choice and equally many others in only paper or e-format... JKR is doing what many people (including many here) have been begging her to do and reviling her for not meeting their demands... now we get people accusing her of milking the franchise...

But then again, you probably wouldn't believe it, even if you had done some research before giving your opinion.... Oh, and quite separately, I can't think of a series much less like Lord of the Rings, frankly, from writer to themes to concept, to anything - oh, I suppose there's magic involved, as well as a few fights, juveniles - well in one, they're of an invented race, but hey - food, drink, messianic figure? hmm.. well... and the good triumph. Yeah, definitely a rip-off. |

To end the arguments, Rowling is not milking her cash cow. And Harry Potter is not like The Lord of the Rings.
