Is this E-Inks new color device?
The Discover Magazine Blog has an article describing a color version of an E-Ink screen, and the following picture accompanies the article --
If this is a sample of the actual device then I'm impressed. The article also contains a nice laymans explanation of how e-ink works and how the new color e-ink will work. Plus it also contains a tidbit on paper batteries that is kind of interesting. |

if it realy does look like that will not be long before some billbord compainys will be buying this.. and fast food.
to be able to change there sign remotely and not use to any power would save alot of money..but cost will have to come down. |

the first picture is atleast 3 years old, and the refresh on that thing was upwards of 70 seconds.
I havent seen the second picture yet, but as far as I know the last reported refresh of a color screen is 10 seconds (and its coming down. more and more) |

From what I've seen in videos it doesn't appear to be much if any slower than the grayscale displays. I believe the supposedly slow refresh times are a result of confusion with the Flepia technology, which is not eInk.

Very interesting. I guess the question is how many more years will it be before we see color eink devices hit the market. I'm hopeful it'll be within the next 5 but I won't be holding my breath.

Color will likely be 2011-2012. Of course, it'll be slow-refresh color. But it'll be color. (Grayscale will have gotten to the point where the flash is nearly instantaneous by then.)

iRex has said they're expecting to have a color eInk device for sale in 2011. I dont' know how accurate that is, but it should at least give you the general ballpark.
