Publishers teaming up for coming Apple Tablet?
Looks like some of the major players in magazine publishing are gearing up for the possibility of apple releasing a tablet.

Uh, no it doesn't.
Basically a consortium of magazine publishers are getting together to set up their own sort of retail store for digital versions of their publications. The article doesn't even mention the eternally-rumored Apple tablet, just existing devices. Offhand I don't blame magazines for taking such a move, but I don't see how this is really going to work. It's just going to put another intermediary layer between the publishers and their customers, and these companies have a lot of competing interests. |

I have to agree with Abecedary. I think Slite really wants an Apple Tablet because that article's only mention of Apple is referencing the iPhone right next to the Blackberry as one the possible platforms for their content.
The title of this thread is totally wrong. As to the referenced article, I'm not sure what to think. If they can make the content more presentable on various platforms, I think it might be a good thing. Personally I hope they steer towards epub, or if necessary pdf, and away from mobi or azw. As epub and pdf allow for a much richer formatting experience. If they format the pdfs for the screen size in question it might not be too bad. Well, Slite is basically repeating what others have been reporting regarding Condé Nast's recent moves, which specifically mentioned an Apple tablet (about which they know nothing,) and the NYT, which apparently has had a talk with Apple on the subject.
Here is some more info about the new Adobe format being prepared to deliver these e-magazines. Yep, yet another new format, to further confuse the market. Publishing is really run by idiots. http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/2009...blet-shows-up/ |

Meanwhile, there is no Apple tablet, its alleged appearance grows more and more mythical by the day (now it's "late 2010!"). However, other companies are likely to crank out something, which will probably demonstrate how useless -- oh, sorry, how tiny of a niche -- tablets will be. Quote:
Spend about 10 seconds with an Adobe Air app, and you'll see how Air is not "another ebook format." |

As far as Adobe Air, I actually like it, just not sure it's all that robust as far as typography goes. And yes, it sounds like it will be yet another, new format, in a market already confused enough about formats. My "idiot" reference was regarding the new format, not working with Adobe. And no, Slite is not fabricating references: Condé Nast has been specifically talking about an Apple tablet, as has the NYT. Do a search. Last edited by Sonist; 11-26-2009 at 03:51 AM. |

Some of you are breaking all the agreed-upon aser rules in this thread. Please be civil:
No more name-calling No more flagrant personal attacks No more disrespect It is quite obvious that your opinions are diametrally opposed! That shouldn't prevent you from being civil, though. Please do try to calm down a bit, everybody! Thanks for your understanding MTravellerH Moderator |
