gentoo and arch are typically only a few weeks behind. But the non-rolling release distros are usually way, way out of date.

Most posters here just brag about their Internet speed, but you do not have to download the entire thing every time a few files change.

No.

I used to have my own version with some changes.
So, you download source and make your own development branch.
Every week you just update your source using git. Usually the vast majority of files do not change from week to week.

The volume of data you need to download is much, much smaller.

Even the slowest possible cable or ASDL speed you can get in the Netherlands (1 MBit, 0.125 MB/s) will still download Calibre in less than 7 minutes.

So the OP either has a dreadfully slow internet connection, or there is something dreadfully wrong with his system (wrong configuration), network (like a router dropping a huge number of packets), network card (bad driver?), or cables.

Even though Calibre is 52 MB large, a download should not take more than 10 minutes *tops*, assuming you're not downloading by dial-up (ISDN) anymore.

Yep... I have access to a very slow wifi (tested at 2Mbit) and I still get the download in about 5-7 minutes. Something definitely wrong.

Took me about 15 minutes to download the new update last night if something is wrong at my end then it is definitely not to do with my Is speed as I generally get 3MB/s from Steam. At that rate Calibre should download in about 16 seconds.

The primary calibre download comes from a single server, not a CDN, therefore, if the network path between that server and your computer is congested, the download can be slow, but in such a case, simply use the alternate download. The primary server itself is on a 1Gbps link, and that link has never reached saturation, the maximum I have ever logged for that server is 750Mbps.
