I should add, this book shows on Amazon as being part of Soho's Noir series of books.

There's no contradiction. "[...] without the publisher’s prior consent [...]".
Clearly, by enabling Amazon's lending feature, the publisher has given consent. And the bit you've highlighted in red only concerns the cover image "[...] in any form of binding or cover other than that in which it is published [...]". The bit concerning not copying the book is the preceding paragraph, but that also is "[...] without the prior permission of the publishers" HTH Last edited by pdurrant; 08-10-2013 at 08:27 AM. |

The author is saying you cangive the ebook to others to read, but it's connection (the author and the book) to Soho Noir is unclear to me. (Sent from my phone - pardon typos) |

BTW I read the bit about the cover as being that you can't reproduce it by putting it in another cover.

Lynx Lynx, what you are seeing the the pre-ebook boilerplate from the publisher. There is a reason behind every line, but it would take a page to explain them all...And most of them only applied to p-pooks...

The "lending enabled" wording means that you are allowed to loan out your kindle book once to someone for two weeks. The publisher has allowed this, but it is only once per book. So you are lending with the publisher's permission, but you cannot lend out again, or even"give it away". Does this clear it up?

The author is NOT saying you can give the ebook to others. The author IS saying that you can use the lending scheme Amazon implement to loan the book to someone else (once), and that the author would be pleased if you used this facility. |

As an aside, even if the author said they were happy for readers to give copies of the ebook to anyone they like, this might still not be sufficient for you to be allowed to do so.
If the author's contract with the publisher gives the publisher exclusive rights to publish and distribute the book, the author does not have the ability to grant such permission until the contract expires. |

As someone who does not own a Kindle, but gets ebooks from Amazon, I read the author's top statement as you can lend this ebook out without restriction.
If it was intended to mean something different then it should have stated so. |

The author states "this book is lending-enabled". That is perfectly clear, and means that the book can be lent using Amazon's lending mechanism.

It doesn't say that you can share the book with everyone you know and anyone else you fancy... "...a friend." has a meaning as printed and it isn't multiple friends... just as "...lending-enabled..." has a specific meaning as mentioned above - one person for a fortnight... |

Gosh so the various lending and copyright info related to Amazon Prime stuff eh. Mmmm, no wonder it didn't make sense to me
Australians are treated quite poorly by Amazon - they don't give us our own site, we have to use the US site where everything is stated in USD, including at the final checkout. Rude to say the least. As to Amazon Prime - it just aint worth it. Here's one review that says most of all you need to know (if you're an Australian) and the title says it all: “Amazon Prime: What They Don’t Tell You, Or How To Alienate International Customers” 'EH says:I suppose it could be worth it, but only if you live in the US, buy lots of physical goods, read an expensive kindle book and watch a lot of TV. Frankly, that’s not a lot of people' (http://emiliehardie.wordpress.com/20...nal-customers/ The main reasons I use Amazon are to get their free ebooks and for price comparisons. So, it seems to me that if they want to make their 'elending' stuff on books perfectly clear then they need to cater to purchasers by actually stating what they mean. Of course, if Australians got their own Amazon website then matters such as this would possibly be clearer. |

I'm Australian and understood this perfectly. The issue is with your comprehension.
