PDA shipments drop for third year

AP brings the sad news that according to research firm IDC worldwide shipments of PDAs declined for the third straight year. Shipments of basic handheld PDAs lacking telephone capabilities shrank to 9.2 million units in 2004, down 13 percent from 10.6 million units in 2003. palmOne sold 3.7 million units in 2004, down by 9% from 4 million in 2003.

David Linsalata, an IDC analyst, urges PDA makers to evolve their devices beyond standard PIM applications. I wonder if she had ever seen a geek doing his tricks on a Tungsten T5 or Dell Axim X50v device. I own several PDAs, but certainly not for their PIM functionality!

Not only that... shipments dropped to the lowest level in five years. And palmOne doesn't look so bad either:

Quote:
At least there is partial good news for PalmOne. The company posted a 59.5 percent sequential gain in shipments, even if shipments decreased 11.1 percent year over year. Hewlett-Packard added 25 percent growth, but also saw a double-digit decrease in year-over year sales. In contrast, Dell lost market share but increased its PDA sales by 22 percent over 2003.

And keep in mind that this drop doesn't include the phone/PDAs (which I consider to be worthless, but seem to sell very well).

The drop really doesn't surprise me since Palm really hasn't brought out anything worth buying since my Tungsten C.
