For comparison purposes, here is the same ebook as pre-processed by GuteBook, my free software that anyone can use to create ebooks for their ebook reader. It uses eBook Publisher v2.3 to produce the .imp ebooks (via my Html2IMP.exe supplied with GuteBook) which differs from Patricia's use of BookDesigner to produce her .imp ebook. My ebooks have 16 grayscale or high colour images for the EBW1150 and REB1200 versions, respectivley. It's source was http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/5199 and GuteBook was supplied with just Etext-No. 5199 and options to accomplish this!

This ebook was prepared from the HTML source code as fetched/filtered/fixed by GuteBook and then MANUALLY intervened by me to fix the List of Illustrations images (all images are now included), add styles to center headings, as well as employ some of Patrica's fixes regarding ditto marks and the ASCII whaling chart used in Appendix I.

Gutebook took only a few minutes to download and fix the ebook, but then to get the right look-and-feel, I spent about an hour tweaking things that initially broke under GuteBook. However, when done I could easily re-generate these .imp ebooks as well as other ebook formats like .epub, .lrf, .mobi/.prc, and .lit, at the same time.

Enjoy!

Nick is our IMP format expert, so you may well prefer his version. But there's a choice, which is always nice.

Interesting that the file sizes are a lot different - is this just to do with the images?

I expect that it is the images: Nick included a lot more than I did.

Yes, that is the reason for the larger size, as I included all 97 illustrations (pictures) that were in the PG HTML source. Another minor difference is that my .imp version has blank line paragraph separations and a larger text size.

However, GuteBook allows you to control these options before the final ebook is created and thus allows you to tailor the ebooks to your personal preferences. I guess MY preferences are clearly evident when you read my .imp version...
