Transfer from Sony to Kobo?

I posted the following on the Sony board three hours ago and I have only just realised that it would be a good idea to post here too!

Quote:
You know, when I first joined mobileread I wondered why people needed more than one ebook reader - now I understand!

My ereader developed a fault at the end of July - switching itself on after complete shutdown, cycling rapidly between page & screensaver until the battery went flat, buttons not doing what they were supposed to... and it was repaired under warranty (via Waterstones Customer Services) and returned to me at the end of August.

Three days ago it started doing all the same things as before. So, I phoned Waterstones CS again yesterday and it has been sent back to Sony...

...I'm torn between being annoyed that the fault has reappeared and pleased that the date on the receipt shows that I bought it on 25 November 2010 - so it JUST meets the 1 year warranty free repair conditions.

I want to buy another ereader but I don't want to have to download all my ebooks again - am I correct in thinking that the Kobo touch would be a good choice as it can handle the same files as the Sony?

TL;DR
I need a back-up ereader and I have a voucher that will enable me to buy a Kobo Touch for £99. Can someone confirm that it will be easy to load the Kobo with the books I already have for my Sony?

Thank you.

Will be it easy? Maybe, maybe not... depends how the gods smile on you that day. Theoretically, it *should* work. But thanks to the wonders of DRM, you might be spending several hours with various tech support folk if the stars don't align for you.

But this sword of Damocles will always hang over your library for as long as you don't ulock the DRM, and it only becomes more daunting the more books you buy. Were I you, I would take the opportunity to search for / ask for help in liberating your library so it can be used in *any* reader/software you choose.

I migrated from a Sony PRS600 to a KT without any problems at all. I just copied the books to a MicroSD card.

It should work, no problem at all. You will need to authorize your new Kobo to the same ADE account that your ePubs belong to. I use ADE to sideload, many people use Calibre, but you can also just drag and drop.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have now ordered the Kobo and it should be here in a couple of days.

At least I know where to start if there are any problems - luckily I don't have a huge collection of purchased books yet!
