Help international

Hi all

I'm a UK citizen living in France. I want Kindle in English. I'm told that the US kindle is the best for me, and not the UK one. I'm Ok with that.

Can I get email on kindle? Is US or Uk Kindle the best?

I have read confusing info on the matter of email accessing from posts here on the site. But everyone seems very helpful.

I'm getting a headache fast! Kindle has been accused of not being clear and because I'm asking these questions, this could be true. In which case I'm very very cautious about buying Kindle.

Can anyone help? I'd really appreciate it!

The US and UK Kindles are the same, but Amazon will only sell to you from their UK store if you have a UK address so, living in France, you will need to buy from amazon.com, not amazon.co.uk.

The Kindle does not have an e-mail application, but if your ISP provides a "webmail" system you may be able to use it via the Kindle's web browser. You are not, however, going to want to use the Kindle's keyboard to write long e-mails!

The Kindle is a book reader. If you want to buy one to read books, that's great, but don't buy one with the expectation of doing lots of web browsing on it; stick with your computer for that.

The Kindle is VERY easy to use; whoever told you that it was "not very clear" has misled you.

Thanks

It seems then that buying Kindle is a problem. It has been posted that you can use it for simple emails (not lots of webbrowsing).. But maybe not, after your info. My main need is book reading, but with the occasional email. If I did get Kindle, there's no point in getting the full 3G/WiFi functions.

The 'not very clear' refers to Kindle's descriptions of its products' functions and abilities. They say it can be used for Web Browsing - I took that to mean simple email sending/receiving. Wrong!

thanks again.

Kindle info speaks about WiFi etc from US locations, using I think, AT&T.

If I buy from the US for use in France, have I the same facilities as the US? Do I lose anything by buying US, (which I have been told is required if I have no UK address?

Sorry to ask all these Qs but the market is becoming saturated with ereaders, and I want to get it right.

If you live in France and have a Kindle (which you need to order from the States) you can: browse the Web via Wifi, browse only Wikipedia via 3G. For email, well, there is no client (no software to use your email account with), but you can (only via Wifi) surf to your e,ail provider's webpage and check your mails and reply (or write new ones).
What has been said though is true, the keyboard isn't the best for typing long texts (it will also simply annoy you to always select special characters from a menu).
If you tell me which provider you're using, I can quickly surf to their webpage on my Kindle and check out what it's like (and make a screenshot, so you get an impression).
