sending scanned book to Kindle for conversion?

After much thought and research and evaluating my utter lack of tech savvy I have decided to send about 20 of my much loved books to a service to be scanned. None are currently available in a commerical ebook format.

In order to keep the cost down I thought I would have them scanned to a cropped PDF format and then email to Kindle for conversion. Most of the books are 250-300 pages, but a few are up to 500.

I have tried to convert PDF to Kindle format myself with not very good results. I'm sure that it was operator error but nonetheless it was a frustrating experience with a mediocre outcome.
