I picked this up at Fictionwise a while back as the teaser sounded promising. It's certainly a breezy read -- and somewhat convoluted. There's very little that's credible, in fact, but then it's not intended to be taken seriously. Eyes wide-open, it's a passable effort.

But it's a loooooong stretch to call this "hard-boiled" unless you put Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in that category. I think the more serious fault is the relentless cartoonishness, no doubt intended, is unfortunately not balanced by memborable turns of phrase or clever prose which feeds the soul.

Chandler, this ain't.

Are these books DRM-restricted?

Also, your website makes my brain hurt.

Well, since the original post was in January 2010, I suspect that the sale is over

Never mind that titles from BooksForABuck cost $3.99 ... you can't get a lot at the Dollar Store any more for "a dollar" and the Five and Dime is a thing of the past, too.

The only reason I resurrected this post was not the "bargain" aspect but for the specific title on offer. Perhaps millions here at MobileRead read and adored it. Or perhaps no one noticed it. I bought it (paid $3.99 in April if you must know) and simply posted my impressions of the content. The author has several other titles available, apparently. If you must know, I don't think it was much of a bargain at $1.00, let alone $3.99.

So, take it for what it's worth ... review of the title, not a comment on the price.
