The closest, IMO, would be Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series (reading both it almost seemed to me like someone was plagiarizing the other) and Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series (which I thought was much better).

I've never seen the Literature Map before. I don't think Guy Gavriel Kay is at all similar to Terry Goodkind. I'd definitely recommend most anything he's written, I just wouldn't say he belongs that close in proximity to Goodkind on the map.

Some of the names farther out on Literature Map have me curious: Ayn Rand, Tom Clancy, Dan Brown?

And no Tolkien?

You have my deepest sympathies.

Bear in mind that the Literature Map is not really advertised as a tool to find authors that are similar to each other. But rather; readers of the author at the center tend also to enjoy reading the authors arranged close by. Perhaps they're similar in style, but perhaps there's other intangibles that make fans of one tend to enjoy the others.

FWIW Fantastic Fiction shows the following as "Visitors to this page also looked at these authors". Not always a good indicator, but I've found some good reads/authors using those lists in the past.

Jacqueline Carey, Clive Barker, Anne Rice, Micheal Chrichton and Alexander Dumas also don't belong.

But then, Literature-Map is just not good for recommendations of similar styles as it's based on what people who read a given author like. Doesn't mean they have to actually be appropriate.

Another fan of Terry Goodkind here, can't wait for the next Sword of Truth book!

Might I recommend:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blade_Itself

Very similar sort of high fantasy, but more grit and less angst than Sword of Truth.

I really liked the Runelord series by David Farland and I'm enjoying Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy.

Well, a little late, but if you like Terry Goodkind I would recommend Ayn Rand (came to that conclusion after reading almost all of the SOT books) and John Norman's Gor series.

I've not read any other author who uses 10 words where 2-3 would suffice, and the number of times he repeats passages almost word for word just wears one down. I still have two more books to go in the series because I want to see how it ends, but the only other series I have read that I felt this bad about losing so much time on would be Stephen R. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series. At least Donaldson is a good writer.

You're slightly confusing how the Literature Map claims to work. The proximity of two authors' names on the Map does not necessarily indicate similarity between the two. But rather, it indicates a higher probability that a reader who likes one, will like the other.

Damn! Tricked into replying to a year-old post.

In my opinion, the Gor novels are some of the most distasteful and horribly written fantasy novels I've ever encountered.

I'm happy that you enjoy them, though.

The original trilogy of books are actually pretty respectable fantasy. It's after that that the series descends into bondage and soft porn.
