Orwell, George: Nineteen eighty-four v1.1. 29 March 2009

Text from Project Gutenberg Australia.

Author: George Orwell (1903 - 1950).

Published in 1949, Nineteen eighty-four focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime. The story follows the life of one seemingly insignificant man, Winston Smith, a civil servant assigned the task of perpetuating the regime's propaganda by falsifying records and political literature. Smith grows disillusioned with his meagre existence and so begins a rebellion against the system that leads to his arrest and torture.

The novel has become famous for its portrayal of pervasive government surveillance and control, and government's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual. Since its publication, many of its terms and concepts, such as "Big Brother," "doublethink" and "Newspeak" have entered the popular vernacular. The word "Orwellian" itself has come to refer to anything reminiscent of the book's fictional regime.

Hi cbell,

When you post a duplicate book, please could you do as the book upload guidelines request, and specify in what way your version of it differs from the previously-uploaded one:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11626

That allows the downloader to make an informed decision about which version they prefer to download.

Thanks!

I've removed it.

When I checked its availability here, I searched on 1984 and nineteen eighty-four, but I didn't search on Orwell.

You didn't have to remove it! Having a range of differently-formatted books is good. We just ask people - if they are able to - to describe how their version differs. We certainly don't object to duplicate versions.

I've re-attached my version of this ebook to the top post.

This version has a cover page, author photo, 3 level Table of Contents, hand-formatted Newspeak and songs, curly quotes, emdashes and page breaks before each chapter.
