There is also the fact that only Google sold the 8GB model, and when you factor in shipping costs and the waiting time, most folks simply went for the 16GB you could buy at brick&mortar stores.

Wrong. Google sold both online and in stores. For a while the 16gb version wasn't available online because it was sold out. I have seen both in b&m stores.
