New official price : 280€

Hi,

According to Cluster21 Bookeen is about to cut the official price
of the GEN3 to 280€ and 380€ for the delux pack.

Enjoy

If they do, I'll mean that Bookeen is actually paying attention

Seriously, do they really have a choice? With the Bebook's support for Mobi, they've lost one of their key competitive differences.

Also, with Retailers like WH Smith being able to offer such a low price (and keep it low), means that consumers know that a large part of that price was pure profit for the company. I figure that they've probably received a lot of complaints about this, especially from UK customers who may have paid a £100 pounds extra for the privilege of buying direct.

I wonder if WH Smith bought the unit in dollar price? We have not seen any explanation for the big price difference.

The BeBook's Mobi support doesn't seem to be that great. It doesn't support dictionary lookup, and I don't think it allows you to upload your own fonts either.

Nope, doesnt support changing of fonts as of yet, the three fonts you can choose from in the MobiPocket Reader in BeBook is hardcoded into the reader itself, increibly stupid really.

Also they stated on their support forum that the WILL support dictionary lookups from within books, just not when or exactly how.

I do agree that t is limited Harry, but keep in mind that for many people Dictionary look up or Font support is not the main priority, Being able to purchase Mobi books is.

Not to mention the multiple formats supported by the Bebook for your own documents. IT does offer a compelling alternative, and they have been quiet proactive about updates, so those shortcomings may be solved In the near future.

What I'm hoping is that this will light a fire under the Gen 3 Software team, and get them to add on the new features in a stable release sooner.

I figure that being a national retailer, they were able to negotiate a much better deal then the NAEB or even the BooksonBoard guys were.

And They probably decided to reduce their profit margins so that they could effectively compete with Waterstone's Sony Reader. After all they do want to keep their ebook store a relevant part of the market.

For me directory navigation is much more important then dictionary lookyp (my N810 is faster looking up a word on the Cybook than using the Cybook). That and the GPL issue would lead me to buy a BeBook today if I was going to buy a reader.

Well, the least expensive cover costs around 40€ and I really believe that no one should carry around this sort of device without a cover.

They probably changed the price to remain competitive with the Sony Reader but you'll end up paying 320€ rather than 300€ for the Sony Reader.

Of course, for those who really enjoy the dictionnary support, Mobipocket or the ability to change the font, the Gen3 is a good choice. On the other hand, the Sony PRS-505 with its instant-on, ePub support, a battery that last several weeks and better file navigation is a pretty neat choice too.

The WH Smith (online only) price remains €226 including a more than adequate case .. very impressive and at the same time a complete puzzle!

No really. There are many companies that sell direct at the suggested retail price specifically so that their dealers will not be under cut. Although Bookeen seems [anecdotal] to sell more direct than via channels.
