Graphic novel azw3 to mobi failed
Last night I attempted to convert a fairly large graphic novel book from azw3 to mobi. The conversion was running for several hours and much to my dismay when it finished it said that it failed. I didn't change any of the default options when converting the file. Below is a log of the error message given me. Please let me know if there's anything I need to fix to get this to work, or if it was likely a fluke and I should try again. I'm using Calibre 1.37 on a Windows 7 operating system. Let me know if there's other info you need. Thanks.

Yeah I only have 4GB of RAM. Though my antivirus started it's monthly full system scan during this and that tends to slow down my laptop a lot. Do you think it would be worth trying again after the scan finishes?
Also are you completely sure it's a memory problem? I tried an online conversion site and the conversion failed almost as soon as it finished uploading the file. I'm not saying that it's impossible for an online site to fail because of a memory problem, but I'd expect it to take longer for it to tell me it failed. If you're sure it's a memory issue and you don't think trying again after my AV scan finishes would make a difference, then maybe I'll try on my mother's brand new Windows 8.1 desktop which has 6GB of ram but I don't want to install software on her computer if it's not necessary(though I can always remove it when I'm done). A part of me thinks I should just screw it and return the ebook to Amazon and buy it from B&N since my tablet app takes epub files, but I don't have a Nook account so I'd have to go through the trouble of setting that up, plus the book costs more on Nook than Kindle. |

You have a K4?
Use AZW3. My tweaked EPUBS look very close on my K4NT (I think I also change a K4 setting to use PUBLISHERS styles) |

Well I don't actually use my Kindle 4 anymore. I read on my tablet using Moon + Reader Pro which doesn't take azw or azw3 which was why I was trying to convert to mobi. Even if I wanted to use my Kindle it would kind of suck because it would be all in black and white and I'd rather be able to see the color images.
Also for some reason the images don't really show up properly with the azw3 file(can't see them at all except the cover image) in the Calibre ebook viewer so I don't have the option of just reading it as is on my laptop. Since it's a graphic novel I might look into how I can extract all the images from the azw3 file and just make a cbr file. |

Not yet. I started to, but it was taking such an insane amount of time that I thought maybe it would work better if I tried mobi. When that was taking forever as well I looked it up and saw other posts telling people to just let it run and sometimes large files can take over a day to finish converting, so I just let the mobi finish running.
I did try another online conversion site and tried to convert to both mobi and epub and both gave me a drm error. I wonder if the drm didn't get properly removed, but if that was the case I shouldn't have been able to open the file with calibre at all right? |

@Kythe42 - At the top of the log there is this

That's so strange as I've never had a problem with drm removal failing. Does it matter where I move the configuration folder, or will any old folder do?

There was no discussion of where I got my tools. BetterRed was talking about changing a system configuration file for Calibre itself.
I understand that instructions on how to actually remove drm are not allowed so I was trying to stay careful to avoid that. With my last question I just wanted to know if any old folder was safe to move the Calibre configuration files to. If this is still breaking the rules somehow, please PM me and explain it to me because I don't wish to do anything wrong. |

@Kythe42 - I suggest you copy it to somewhere like C:\_Temporary\calibre and set the CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIRECTORY to point to that location. If that fixes the problem then move it somewhere sensible. I have mine in the same location as my libraries E:\Calibre Libraries, which also means it gets backed up with the libraries.
Another thing you could try is to exclude the %APPDATA%\calibre from your AV scanning, maybe an AV update has started to mess around with permissions Ψ² BR Last edited by BetterRed; 06-01-2014 at 06:11 PM. |

I followed your suggestions and attempted to convert to epub this time. While it was stuck on 47% I viewed the job details and saw it still had the same error about permissions with the plugin so I cancelled the job. I think I'll probably have to contact the person that makes the plugin. Thanks anyway for your help.

I found another plugin that actually very easily allowed me to convert the file to an epub and almost instantly too. It still won't display properly in the Calibre ebook viewer though, but I can view it on my tablet app, though the pagination is a bit weird.
If anyone is interested in figuring out why this file won't display the images properly in Calibre's ebook viewer, a sample can be downloaded from Amazon. I found that there was the same problem with the sample as with the full ebook. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Anyway thanks again to everyone that took the time to respond. I'll be interested if anyone figures this mystery out, but for now at least I found a way to convert and view the file. |
