Tether kindle for WI-FI?
Is it possible to tether a kindle to use the wi-fi? I DO NOT want to use this for free 3G! Only wi-fi!

Is has been discussed. It is possible, but we did not provide examples because a script to allow tethering wifi from USBnet could also be abused to tether 3G, which is not allowed.
The kindle runs a version of linux, so similar routing table and firewall rules used in desktop linux will work here, perhaps with slight modification. Studying how to do this on linux will guide you into finding your own solution. And HOPEFULLY, learning how to do it yourself will give you time to think about the consequences of abusing 3G, and how to safely avoid doing that (even accidentally from a script error). You understand how to use a tool safely much more completely if you build that tool yourself. And learning new stuff is good for your brain... If one of us how know how to do such things just give you such a powerful (and potentially dangerous) tool, we would cheat you out of learning it yourself, including how to yield such a tool safely and effectively. However, google can find such things if you really cannot learn this stuff, but promise to play safe and not abuse Kindle 3G. Now, if your kindle is a wifi-only version (no 3G as you say), there is no chance of abusing 3G. However, I have seen posts saying that even wifi web browsing goes through the amazon proxies, so if true, you may want to bypass the kindle proxies (if needed). Not sure on that one though, and no time to check on its veracity. Good luck! Last edited by geekmaster; 03-07-2014 at 01:34 PM. |

Fairly pointless but possible over USBnetworking. you would need a good knowlage of Linux networking and command line. Specific discussions of tethering are prohibited here as even if you want to use WiFi, it could still help someone else break Amazon's TOS over 3G.
I'm curious what you want to tether the K4 to . . . . |

Sadly, there was a post at hackaday about tethering 3G, with a heated discussion between the script kiddies and the kindle enthusiasts who hang out here (or did at the time of that hackaday post)...
The script kiddie path (as seen at hackaday) is fraught with peril, and learning linux is the safe way to go from here, to accomplish all sorts of kindle wizardry, while learning how to use it properly and with respect to the kindle TOS. Such a script might be hacked to work on a wifi-only kindle (with a little new linux knowledge), however such a script should not be reposted back at these forums, nor should details about how to use or abuse it... |

But the problem is if we help you, we are also helping those who would tether 3G, using too much bandwidth, and forcing amazon to terminate our free 3G access on K3 and earlier... We do not want to risk that.
So if it is worth the effort of learning linux skills to do this yourself, go for it. Reread my posts above for hints where to find such information to tell you what linux skills are most needed to accomplish your goal. Or... just get a cheap USB wifi stick for your computer that lacks wifi. Plug and play, and no greasy script kiddie stuff needed... Why do things the hard way just to save a few dollars? oh, and I tried USBNetwork using diags but the pc couldn't find the right driver for it. Using W7 it found the right driver but my K wasn't connected to wi-fi so it didn't work

I thought Amazon already throttled the 3G on the K3 to max at 50MB to prevent abuse. Which implies they think that is good enough to solve the problem and they don't care beyond that. And >KT can't connect to non-Amazon/Wikipedia/Bing Translate anyway.

I don't have 3G so it's not a prob anyway, if I did I would NOT use it as Amazon charges if you go over their limits I think...

They don't do tethering at all, actually. They will charge for using WhisperNet for personal document delivery. They also blocked all but specific destinations (the Kindle Store, Wikipedia, and the Bing Translate function IIRC) from being contacted at all on their newer devices, and capped it at 50MB browsing on the already-existing KK.

no I mean even if I would steal if I thought I could get away with it I wouldn't because Amazon would just charge for the internet service...
