I'd say it was much more about the personal growth of Macon - his self-actualisation. The relationship is sort of an aid to an end, not an end in itself - storywise. This is a novel about Macon, not a novel about Muriel and Macon. It's drama with some humour -- not quite romance, in my opinion.

This is most definitely, clearly and publicly defined as 'romance'. Do look it up It might be a slightly different definition of romance than you think though.

I think males just make these up so they don't have to be seen reading romance. That would have to make them get into touch with an emotion that they are so good at ignoring in real life.

BTW - when I was in Russia a few years back - everyone on the trains was reading. And most of the readers had those brightly coloured paperbacks that indicate romance novels (you know those with the real pretty ladies and wellpackaged males) .

I think it's unfair to categorize men as disliking romance fiction because of some kind of moral failing. I think the reason most men dislike romance novels is because they tend to be written from the perspective of the woman (whether or not the writer is female). Books that treat both the main characters with equal importance are more likely to appeal to a wider range of people.

Hee-Hee. Way too much estrogen there I think.

I've actually read a few of the Harlequins etc. way back when I was writing for a living and thought I might try my hand at writing them. I even had a brief fling as a member of the Romance Writers of America.
