Rival to Nexus 7

The 7-inch tablet class proves very alluring and Asus thought it wise to join the fray and compete on its own terms. The company recently confirmed the upcoming release of the Asus MeMO Pad.

The confirmation came in the form of a dedicated site for the new tablet, touted as the most affordable small tablet and likely to rival the appeal of current leaders namely Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

The 7-inch tablet class proves very alluring and Asus thought it wise to join the fray and compete on its own terms. The company recently confirmed the upcoming release of the Asus MeMO Pad.

Asus is not exactly a newbie in the field, having partnered with Google in producing the powerful Nexus 7, so it surely knows its way around.

For starters, the Asian gadget maker deliberately trimmed down the specs it deployed with the MeMO Pad: a single-core 1GHz processor from VIA, a screen resolution of 1024 x 600, a battery pack that runs up to seven hours of operation and Android JellyBean.

VERY poor screen resolution and a far from stellar battery life. Sounds very "middle of the road" to me.

Apart from it being 'cheaper' I wonder why they have done it - unless they have a lot of "spare parts".

A dangerous move that may damage reputation ?

I don't know about it being a rival, other than it's a competitor in the 7" market. The specs are crappy compared to most current 7" stuff, it's more in the class of the Nook Color or other stuff from that generation.

"Most affordable" seems to imply it'll be cheap. It'll need to be, with those specs.

$149 is too much. Price it at $99 and they'll have a smash hit on their hands.

I expect this kind of junk from Acer, but not Asus. Too bad, Asus was really emerging as a good quality manufacturer. In design and build anyway.

Is it the same? The iPad has a larger screen (7.9" vs. 7") and it's a different aspect ratio. I've not done the maths - does the Asus come out at 163ppi, the same as the iPad?

EDIT:

No, if my calculations are correct, the Asus has a slightly higher resolution: about 167dpi, compared to the iPad's 163.

(Assuming it's a 16:9 aspect ratio screen with a 7" diagonal, that makes the height 6.101". 1024 pixels divided by 6.101 = 167 dpi)

1024 x 600 on a 7" display = 169 PPI
