About the price, it's probably the same strategy as in videogames.
Most videogame consoles (the most notable exception is the Wii) are sold for a price lower than the costs. Why? Because companies don't want to sell consoles, they want to sell games. So they partially subsidize the console prices so that more people buy them and they sell more games. That's very important because games have almost no variable costs (cost per unit) but have a very high fixed cost (overall cost no matter how many units sold). That's because game development is very expensive (we are talking 7 figures here) but the actual games are basically a plastic disc inside a paper box. So, back to the Kindle, Amazon doesn't want to sell e-readers, they want to sell e-books. So they can sell Kindles for a price lower than the costs and still make a profit by selling books. And I imagine e-books are pretty profitable. That's why the Kindle and the Nook can afford having very low prices, which on the other hand makes life very hard for independent hardware makers, with no book stores. |

Im quite happy about what amazon are doing for the ebook industry. The way I see it is that because of the low price of the device more people will now buy a kindle including people who would never have bought an ereader before. This means that more people will now be buying books. I imagine/hope this will lead to two things, ebooks will become cheaper and more publishers will produce ebook versions of their latest releases and even past releases because they can see that more people are buying.

You do make a good point. However, I was in "one of those moods" today and probably went a bit far. However, this kind of thing irks me. It was quite similar to a post in a forum I read where "lose" instead of "loose" is commonplace. I will loose it definately :-), even though English is my second language. I admire your tolerance and would like to be just like you, tolerant of these little oversights and errors.

I've ordered a Kindle 3. But re it being the best at the lowest price:
1. No reviewers have had it long enough to fairly crown it as best. I'd wait to see what Consumer Reports says after a rigorous comparison. 2. In the US, the Kobo eReader is $149.99 from Borders with free shipping. And you get a $20 gift card. And Borders, unlike Amazon, participates with affinity rebate sites like eBates.com, bringing the price down by another $6 or so. And you get double Border bucks, which might mean a little something to someone. Price negatives for the Kobo are the $10.99 higher base price and the likelihood (I haven't checked) that Borders charges sales tax in more states than Amazon. Adding it all up, I'd say that the Kobo is a smidgen cheaper than the non-3G Kindle. Also a consideration is that, according to borders.com, the Kobo "Usually ships in 24 hours." Re privacy concerns regarding electronic records of what you read, US librarians take deleting such records, after you are done reading the book, quite seriously. Personally, I would prefer that our library keeps a record I could search of everything I have taken out, even at the price of that record also being available to law enforcement on presentation of a subpoena. But that's me. I don't ridicule people who want what they read to be strictly private, but, personally, I don't care. |

Why are some of you so paranoid? Amazon has not removed any eBooks since they removed 1984. I think they won't be doing that again. So give it up, move on and enjoy reading.

Maybe the OP is from a country that until recently kept very close tabs on its citizens and their behavior? I know that I would probably develop some kind of paranoia against authorities and huge organizations if I had lived in a society like that. If you want to remain anonymous I suppose you need to exchange your electronic devices every two or three months.

I hope this helps. If you are seriously uncomfortable with a reader that connects to the internet you might be happier with one of the fine readers made by Astak. There's a forum here for them; you should check that out. |

Turn the Light on
Thanks for your Anwers, especially thanks to you who awnsered some Questions.
I just was asking the critical questions for everyone, who is concerned about their privacy. no offense. We should wait till we have it and check it out. Maybe in a while (hopefully) a experienced developer will check the structure and internal functions, hack it, and develope some tweaked firmware with some more privacy for k3 until then.. have a good time and keep reading & learning! greetings Achiever Last edited by Achiever; 08-09-2010 at 04:58 PM. |
