0.8.8 is *ancient*. Do not use the ubuntu provided calirbe package. Use the official calibre binary from: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

Calibre 0.8.8 is a very old version - many plugins (if not all) now require a much more recent version. The current version is 0.8.40 (i.e. 32 revisions later).
EDIT: Seems Kovid got in ahead of me! At least it is nice to know that my answer was the correct one |
