I had to check my profile because I couldn't remember what avatar I was using.
Some of the online avatars I've made up: Meez.com: http://elouai.com/candybar.php : Face Your Manga (also in the OP): |

I just used the free Gimp2 to crop out my head,
use the eraser tool to remove any background, remove the color/change to grayscale, scale to fit in the avatar size requirements, save as a GIF image. In this case the result is a 5.1KB gif file. Last edited by Ken Maltby; 01-01-2010 at 04:22 PM. Reason: It should be "KB" not "kb" |

I usually just go no avatar, or a simple glass of water with a straw. It's easily recognizable, and fairly unique on forums. Not many other people with glass-of-water avatars.

Is your glass-of-water avatar half full?

Pratchett-quoting excuse:
"There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!" (Terry Pratchett, The Truth) |

An avatar image is certainly not required. But it can be a fun way to create a visual identity online. I tend to use the same image most of the time, but not on all the forums I visit, as my activity in different places suggests different faces. But within a forum, I tend to switch rarely, and if I do, use a new image related to the old image in some way, to maintain continuity. But that's just me.
I know someone on another forum who regularly changes avatar, signature, AND user name. That's too confusing for me. I have a hard enough time remembering who I am from day to day. |

My avatar was drawn by a friend. I have no drawing skills of my own.
