ADE 3.0 and RMSDK 10 released

Adobe has released new versions of ADE and RMDSK.

Quote:
More Secure DRM Scheme

Digital Rights Management scheme to protect ePub and PDF files from unauthorized viewing is now hardened and made more secure.

Enhanced Support for Vertical Layout

Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 provides enhanced support for vertical layout and orientation:

• Added support for the CSS property "epub-text-orientation"

• Supported values: mixed | upright | sideways-right | sideways (sideways-left and use-glyph-orientation are not supported).

• Proper alignment of special characters that act as both full width and half width.

Support for CSS 2.1 Text Properties

With the support for CSS 2.1 text properties, Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 can now render books that use CSS 2.1.

• Added support for CSS “position” property.

• Added support for CSS “Z-index” property.

• Added support for list-style-position value “inside”.

• Enhanced support for CSS Float property

Bummer, I had at least expected basic ePUB3 support. Not the javascript and alike, but the more functional parts.

I thought that they'd at least support the epub:type attribute for footnotes, endnotes etc.

It looks like pretty much all of the new features are only useful for displaying vertical Japanese text, which is kind of pointless, because there are already a number of eBook readers available in Japan that presumably offer much better vertical text support.

Who cares about those? Where is "font-variant:small-caps"? What about the more useful "text-transform" and "visibility" (I'm not sure if the latter is already supported)?

Does "more secure DRM" mean we'll have to update the inept scripts?

Plus, some folks already noted annoying stuff in this ADE 3.0, especially with font rendering. (I haven't had time to try it out myself yet.)

Will ADE 2.0 still work?

And shouldn't they be focused on a linux release instead? Since they have it working in-house?

Custom User ID (Vendor ID, Bookseller ID)

When you open a book requiring alternate authentication, you will be prompted to select which ID and provide credentials (user name and password). You may, for example access a book from Google with a Google ID (referred to as a Vendor ID), or a book from Barnes & Noble (referred to as Bookseller ID). This is further described in the Getting Started eBook installed with Adobe Digital Editions.
What does this mean? Can you now have ebooks with multiple IDs at the same time?

I would think so. Originally you had only one ID for all vendors products since the id was generated by Adobe. But it now sounds like each vendor will have its own id so you would need multiple ones to buy from multiple sources. Not sure how this would work for Library checkout but likely Overdrive might have its own DRM id. It does bring up the point of just staying on the current system to avoid this, at least till they make it mandatory.

I installed ADE 3.0 (and some other things) on a virgin Windows machine, registered it using my Adobe ID, and proceeded to have absolutely no issues whatsoever doing all the things I normally do to ADEPT ePubs after I buy them.

The font-rendering IS quite atrocious, I might add.

This might change, though, once epub sellers switch to Content Server 5.

Hell, it could always change. There's been that risk all along. But in the meantime ... it hasn't.

Actually, I expect lenders to switch to the new content server long before retailers (unless they're "encouraged" strenuously to do so, of course).
