Google Maps with Satellite photos!
Google Maps has added Satellite imagery – very very cool feature allowing you to view an aerial image of your desired location that you can zoom and pan. You find it on the right top corner of Google Maps.

This is all pretty cool. Check this one, the burning man camp in Gerlach:

Check out Seneca Rocks, in WV. I did some rock climbing there a few years ago.

Check out this one:
http://www.paulrademacher.com/housing/ It's a combination of Craigslist and Google Maps for viewing rental and for-sale listings across the country. |

Thanks, Morpheus. I hope google maps (or at least the satellite images) cover all the globe someday.

Google Maps + Satellite is interesting, however... almost all of my state is blanked out, except two tiny slivers. Bleh.
But... while the "panning" part is fun, letting you explore other areas, Terraserver still gets several orders of magnitude closer than Google can at the highest zoom. Take a look.. Here are two satellite images of my previous residence in South San Francisco, CA: One using Terraserver and one using Google Maps. Terraserver wins, hands-down. See that pool? That's the pool I did laps in every night after work. See the round bit to the lower-right? That's the jacuzzi I used to relax in after the laps, burning off the stress of my workday. You can even see the door to my condo in the Terraserver version. Google Maps definately has a great technology, but I wish their maps would get closer, and that they'd at least begin cataloging my section of the country (the Northeast). Now if you REALLY want to see some cool mapping, head on over to Maps24 and poke around for awhile. Set up some driving directions and click around, its fully animated and really slick. They even won a "Webby" award in 2004 for their technology. Cool stuff. |
