AP: New U.S. Govt. Rules Allow Unapproved iPhone Apps

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100726/...ital_copyright

Quote:
Owners of the iPhone will be able to legally break electronic locks on their devices in order to download software applications that haven't been approved by Apple Inc., according to new government rules announced Monday.
Quote:
allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
I thought we had that already.

There's no law against jailbreaking your iPhone to allow the use of unapproved apps; it's just a breach of your user agreement. It's not illegal.

And since jailbreaking is basically taking advantages of flaws in iOS4, this won't stop Apple from patching the flaws and breaking the jailbreaks-as happens when they update the OS.

actually the exceptions are being granted with respect to the DMCA. apple (and other companies) attempted to use the DMCA to make it illegal to jailbreak your phone. the copyright office has now said that the DMCA can not be used in these cases. doesn't mean companies can't get congress to "fix" the law, pass a new one making it illegal, or take the whole matter to court to get a different "interpretation" that is more favorable to them.

Interesting-Ars Technica believes that ruling was squarely about Apple:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/n...e-fair-use.ars

Quote:
The most surprising ruling was on "jailbreaking" one's phone (exemption number two), replacing the company-provided operating system with a hacked version that has fewer limitations. Make no mistake: this was all about Apple. And Apple lost.

Kjk: you have quoted more than 5 words from an AP story, which may charge for that.

What a waste of time and energy-maybe now they can devote that time and energy into making iOS more secure.

Regarding jailbreaking and such..... I am a Texan. Down here when we buy something, it is OURS. If I want to buy an iPhone and Jailbreak it, light it on fire, play hockey with it...etc... it ain't nobodies business but my own.....

I'd settle for an improved bookstore, with better selection, pricing and UI. Oh, and while they are at it, they can focus on making iBooks fully ePub compliant -and give us more control over the margins.

And pie for everybody !!!
