Free (Amazon) Assorted Titles June 14th

We have now started the third cycle of the KDP Select program. This means that titles may now have been free at least 11 days now. Therefore, I'm seeing mostly repeats. There may be days when I won't post anything.

After a bit of file cleaning, I have enough on my TBR list to last me 17.3 years at current reading speed. Looking for new free things will no longer be a priority for me. I was actually surprised how large my TBR pile was. There were titles all over my hard drive and when I put them all together

For today we have:
The Quiet Assassin: Third Edition by Thomas Kirkwood. Action adventure originally published by Dutton in 1985. Reviews mixed.

Quote:
"The Quiet Assassin" is an unusual and original thriller that occurs in East Berlin during the cold war. The heroine Käte Frassek, like Lucy in Ken Follet's "Eye of the Needle," is an unparalleled and intriguing woman protagonist. Frassek, a respected scientist, leads a double life and, with pen in hand, becomes the quiet assassin. Her main goal is to begin a revolution which would ultimately free the German people from a police state. She intends to begin this revolt by killing the head of the East German secret police.

An enduring love develops between Käte and an American physician, but not even this intense love can stop Käte from her mission. After twenty years of plotting against the repressive regime, the end is chilling for Käte and the ones she loves.

The Hogs of Cold Harbor: The Civil War Saga of Private Johnny Hess, CSA by Richard Lee Fulgham. A combo fiction and non-fiction military history. The author takes a soldier's diary and extrapolates from it.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Hogs-Cold-...9697125&sr=1-1

Quote:
The wild hogs of Virginia are vicious. They attack, kill and devour. They show no mercy and eat their victims alive. The wild hogs are smart. They strategize with their enemies. They are worthy adversaries. But the wild hogs have honor. They will not hurt or destroy their own.

In the minds of some, this last, simple fact raises the wild hogs of Virginia to an ethical level far above that of Man. A hog will not kill its own. But Man will and has.

The Civil War brought man against man, family against family, and brother against brother. Some fought for their God, others for freedom and liberty, still others to protect their homes and loved ones. Young men fought for the pride of their land and country and heritage.

But in the battlefields, looking upon the mountains of dead and wounded, seeing the enemy’s face and recognizing it as your own, a man begins to question the true meaning of honor. As the wild pigs feast upon the slaughtered masses of men, yet show compassion and solitude with their own kind, field soldiers may begin to look deep into their souls at their own morality and purpose.

John Henry Hess joined the confederate army with his heart filled with pride. He would fight for his country, for his wife and unborn child, and for the right of the Lord to rule over His great land. There was not a Rebel more proud than Johnny Hess was.

But in those dark fields, young Johnny Hess came to realize that there were stunning similarities between Man and Animal. The body of a man, blown apart by gunfire, is almost identical to that of a hog. There was little difference between the yearly slaughter of the farm hogs and the slaughter of men on the battlefield. Except that a hog would not kill its own, as he had done.

The Hogs of Cold Harbor implores readers to question our history as well as themselves. Author and historian Richard Lee Fulgham, M.A. crafted this haunting tale of the good and evil that dwells within us all based on the diaries of Southwest Virginian John Henry Hess, Pvt., CSA (Company G, 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Pickett’s Division, Longstreet’s Corps, 1862-1864). Is Man truly no better than the animals he commands and destroys? The Hogs of Cold Harbor is a powerful, haunting story in which Richard Lee Fulgham delves deep into the timeless questions of our existence. Are we Man? Are we Animal? And what is the difference?

Another "uncut" edition. If you picked up Sweet Dreams earlier, this is the next in the series.

Dream On (UNCUT Edition)(Hard-Boiled Thriller) by Aaron Patterson
http://www.amazon.com/Edition-Hard-B...9698621&sr=1-2

Quote:
Evil is on the hunt...And it s tracking you!

RUSSIA, JUNE 19, 1966 THERE is a story about a Red Dog that is running wild, killing sheep and other livestock under the watchful eye of a full moon. One farmer, who claimed to have seen the Red Dog, said it looked like a man, but ran on all fours and foamed at the mouth. This account was never confirmed.

NEW YORK, AUGUST 23, 2009 RUMORS of a secret agency arise with questions about the government's involvement. Speculation is that this group, known only as the WJA, is involved in countless assassinations involving the Russian Mafia, terrorist leaders, and suspected murderers and rapists. The FBI and CIA deny any such group exist and claim the rumors are just that rumors.

THE BATTLE BEGINS IN YOUR MIND...

Dream On thrusts you into the mind of a killer so tormented, that you will ask yourself if evil lies within all of us. The evil nature is like a caged monster, begging to be set free so it can come out and play. Whatever you do don't let it! The highly anticipated second book in the WJA series will have you excited, and scared all at the same time. In this thrilling and intricate work, Aaron Patterson spins a tale of shadow and sunlight. Prepare yourself. Check the locks. Leave the lights on.

Highly rated mystery/suspense. Self published on Smashwords. Sample first.
This Time You Lose by Chris Stralyn
http://www.amazon.com/This-Time-You-...9699989&sr=1-1

Quote:
What would you do if street thugs invaded your home? What if you're a daycare provider, caring for a dozen children at the time? Lisa Kaamp, a most unlikely heroine, faces just such a nightmare in This Time You Lose, the suspense driven story of one woman's struggle to survive when she and the children she cares for become victims of a home invasion gone terribly wrong.

Lisa Kaamp operates a small childcare business out of her home in Nogeksum, Michigan. Highly respected and known for going the extra mile for her daycare kids, she thinks she's handled every daycare emergency possible. But nothing prepares her for the horror she now faces.

Lisa finds herself bound and gagged, four strange men in her home, and the daycare children held hostage in the next room. Terrorized by her captors as the authorities work to meet the ransom deadline, she tries negotiating with the men for the release of the children, but soon realizes they have no intention of letting anyone go.

With the deadline approaching, Lisa must do the unimaginable to protect the children and get everyone out alive.
