Plastic Logic quits ereaders business
Bad news for use folks who love our eReader. PL calls it quits. They might blame the market from shifting to a tablet market. But I blame eInk and PL for taking too long to come up with a color display after delaying production for years it's no surprise the tablet market took them by storm.

Wait what? Yesterday I saw an article on slashdot saying PL just showed off a flexible color display.

I would guess that they will do better selling the screens then the e-readers.

Shocking, huh?
They actually did ship a production model in "quantity" for a pilot ereader program in Russian schools. Moving to screens-only is a good way to leverage the value of their real corporate assets and get out of non-core activities (software, consumer electronics). They were dead in the water as a consumer electronics company but might still have a future as a component (or technology) supplier to the giant multinationals. At least they're staying in the business for now, unlike Bridgestone: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/15/bridgestone-e-paper/ |

Which is the lesson Amazon learned with the DX and why it has never been upgraded or seen any new developments since the DXG was released.

Cool. It makes more sense for them to be a supplier of screens than try to sell their own e-book reader.

But they *did* ship a few hundred/thousand(?) working units. And the tech works so they're not a vapor peddler. I'm thinking they're just really bad at the business side. |

PL is in the screen business? I thought they just take eink screen and rework it to make it glass free.
Yes I remember the que. I actually thought about buying it. Then the iPad just made it look ridiculously expensive. At least PL was wise enough to see that. Or maybe they should've been foolish and released it anyway, because it WAS damn cool. |

It wasn't necessarily the iPad that did the Que in. Imho the fact that 6" e-ink prices dropped like a rock did them in. If it had been just the iPad they could have dropped their price to $400 and still sold well.
