Competition Bureau strikes deal that's expected to lower ebook prices in Canada

Quote:
The Competition Bureau announced Friday that Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster have agreed to remove or amend clauses in their distribution agreements with individual ebook retailers.
In a statement, the Bureau said it expects the move will restrict retail price competition, effectively allowing retailers to offer discounts on ebooks.
Finally Canadians will see some lower ebook prices. I can't believe the difference in prices between the US and Canada. I hope this happens soon. I've spent up to $15 for an ebook (and not a newly released one either). I hope we can start seeing more for $9.99 or less.

It's about time! I'm surprised they didn't act sooner to keep Canadians buying in Canada (and paying sales tax).

This is wonderful news. Ebook prices are getting ridiculous and we don't get many of the sales the U.S. gets.

Excellent.

The price in Canada for ebooks has been ridiculous for some time now, to the point where I've gone back to physical books. Hopefully this results in more reasonable pricing. It's unfortunate that it doesn't sound like the Competition Bureau ordered the publishers to issue rebate cheques; I guess they'll just pocket all the extra money they made from violating (allegedly) the Competition Act (Canada).

Oh, finally. I've never seen any reason why any ebook should be more expensive than a mass-market paperback, so I hope this does bring more books down to a sub-$10 price. (I mean, I've still paid the higher price on some books, but I didn't like it.)

A question, if I may. The quote in the original post says:

Quote:

How does "restricting retail price competition" allow retailers to offer discounts? Surely price competition is a good thing, isn't it? Why does it need to be restricted?

Yeah, that part of the CTV article makes no sense whatsoever. The CBC article has no such statement. At the moment I'm 90% certain it's a screw-up on CTV's part.

I'm happy to hear about this agreement. Although I firmly believe that Agency had certain beneficial side effects, its time may be past.

The quote is accurate, the original report contains a typo. From the Competition Bureau:

Quote:
The four publishers have agreed to remove or amend clauses in their distribution agreements with individual ebook retailers that the Bureau believes have the effect of restricting retail price competition, which will allow retailers to offer discounts on ebooks.

Wow, this is just pathetic. An 18 month investigation and the result is an agreement to stop breaking the law for 4.5 years. No mention of any punishment and no admission of guilt. Oh and consumers are supposed to be happy about it, what a joke.

http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/e...eng/03658.html

Quote:
"This agreement should benefit Canadian consumers by lowering the price of ebooks in Canada. Businesses operating in the digital economy must realize that anti-competitive activity will not be tolerated, whether it occurs in the physical world or the digital one."
Yes, this type of conduct will not be tolerated. If you violate the Competition Act of Canada let it be known that you will be severly spoken to and made to sign a piece of paper.

For evidence here's the piece of paper.

And it gets worse. In Ontario, the sales tax on physical books is 5% but the sales tax on ebooks is 13%. This is a government that almost never misses an opportunity to increase taxes.
