Do you want the books to be ABOUT the author's criminal activity, or just written by a criminal, because a lot of authors may have been convicted of one thing or another.

And is there any special reason you hijacked someone else's months-old thread, rather than starting your own?

Absolutely, I am an old lady who has no idea how to use this computer thingy. I apologise if this is a no no but it is the only way I have a voice. I actually did read Catch me if you can. I just discovered Book Riot Challenge and when looking for a criminal book found this site. thanks for your help.

Above the list of existing threads and just above the title line "Threads in Forum : Reading Recommendations" is a small button entitled "New Thread" - this is where you need to click to start a new topic. It's not easy to see - it took me a while to find it the first time I wanted to use it.

I just unearthed an old paperback entitled Brief Against Death, by Edgar Smith, a death-row inmate who claimed to be innocent; his case became something of a cause célèbre in the mid- to late 1960s when William F. Buckley Jr. (the conservative founder of National Review) believed he'd been unjustly convicted. Buckley helped him get a new trial and he was eventually freed after a plea deal.

Spoiler:
A few years later Smith committed another crime, was convicted of attempted murder, and was sentenced to life in prison. Smith's protestations of innocence in the earlier case, as detailed in Brief Against Death, turned out to have basically been a con job.

Any book recommendation similar to this story would be greatly appreciated.
The best series that meets your story line would be A man of His Word By David Duncan .. Incredible fantasy series
starts with The Magic Casement
