I believe I may have reached my breaking point last weekend. Over the day on Friday and all through the night we had six inches of new snow after what has been the most seasonal snowfall so far in years. Between that and the high winds I had to shovel away several snow drifts that were chest high and about three to four feet thick to clear the walk from my front door to the street Saturday morning. Then when I came home in the evening I found that the city plow truck had undone all the work done in clearing my steps down to the street.

As long as the polar vortex remains 'deranged' - it will continue sending down blasts of frigid air on a weekly basis onto North America .... sigh ...
one air mass arrives today, and then another colder air mass next week ... with no end predicted ... [For some reason I keep thinking of the movie The Day After Tomorrow] |

From Environment Canada:
"Extreme wind chill values below minus 40 moving into Central Saskatchewan this morning and spreading south today. Dangerous wind chills near minus 50 likely tonight. Arctic high pressure building into Saskatchewan will bring another surge of bitterly cold Arctic air today into tonight across Southern Saskatchewan. Northerly winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h are expected for a few hours early this morning in the Wascana Basin south of Regina giving locally poor visibilities in blowing snow. Surrounding locations may also see more localized blowing snow overnight as the system moves off to the east early this morning. However, the longer lasting concern will be the extreme cold that will be flooding in today through tonight into the weekend. Across the south, temperatures will fall into the minus 25 to 30 degree mark early this morning. Coupled with winds of 20 or 30 km/h, central areas will see wind chill values dip below minus 40 this morning gradually spreading south. While winds will diminish during the day, there is little reprieve from the cold in store today as temperatures will at best hold steady before falling even further tonight. Overnight low temperatures into Saturday will fall to near minus 40 Celsius in most areas, where even a slight wind will generate wind chill values below minus 50. While some locations may see slight moderation in wind chill values with calm winds or brief warming in the afternoon hours, this extreme cold is expected to last into early next week. At extreme wind chill values of minus 40 frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes. At values below minus 50 frostbite may occur in less than 5 minutes." I like how the first warning just gets dismissed as, but that's not the real concern in the third paragraph. It's like 'yeah, that's bad, but take a look at this crap.' Currently: -24C, -39C windchill and that's as warm as it's apparently going to be until Monday. March comes in like a lion? No, more like a mauling polar bear, frankly the lion should run. And run now while the getting is good. |

Still stinking hot and bone dry here. Tediously so. 37, 38, 32 (woohoo!), 34, 36. Lots of howling easterlies, straight off the desert.

Winter storm watch in effect. From tomorrow night through Monday we're due to get up to 12 more inches of snow.
I really think I just heard my snow shovel whimper! |

So ... today is sunny & temps in the 60's -> low 70's (sorry cromag).
Then tomorrow - cold front swooping in - sleet/freezing rain - temps diving into the 20's F by the afternoon, followed by a bitterly cold night (into the teens or lower). Think I'll ride this one out at home - all the schools will open for at least 3 hours to register as a 'full' school day and then dismiss class at the same time - to clog the roads ... again. I'm not going to be part of that idiotic nightmare ever again. |

What's predicted here isn't too bad—only one or two inches of snow in the forecast. On the other hand, I remember the "Circus" blizzard of 1980 that was predicted to be a mild storm that would only dump one or two inches. It brought five and followed that with twelve more the very next day.

Oh, look at that. It's snowing.
We're in the "up to 12 inches" band, last I heard. |
