No. No. No. No.

Jon, you are being both overly zealous and silly here.

My friends, if you just look at Chandle'sr production that I just posted and that I read all and reread in part, you will immediately realize that it extends in all directions, not only in the time sequential one.Chandler might have described the gestures of a bartender in a short story than reused it in a novel, than again used a piece of it in an other short story. His bent noses are just fantastic and we have seen them in countles movie. It is a texture not a sequence. So Ea is totally right and you Jon, you might appear to someone that does not like you and appreciate you like I do just a little argumentative for the sake of the argument. Big kisses to both. And let be peace and wisdom for all.

beppe, some writers never equal their first novel let alone surpass it. I can't think of an example offhand but I am sure that's the case.

Are you saying Chandler is a great writer or is that the bird's judgment?

Hi Charlie, I am glad that we can be light hearted. He was a great pro, working at Hollywood. He produced in that genre, and not in the higher league, of William Faulkner just to make a name. BTW William Faulkner co-wrote with Chandler in Hollywood.

I like his stories, his humor and ironic attitude. The prose is top notch, the details amazing. The pendulum, what master Kitano calls the building and release of tension, is practiced with great ability. When you see a movie like Tarantino's Jackie Brown, an absolute masterpiece, there is Chandler written all over it. So his influence is alive and rolling.

I wish Earle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason books were available as ebooks. Especially the earlier ones, where he broke laws left and right in the pursuit of the truth and was generally a hair's breath away from being disbarred. Any of them would have made a great book club selection.

Maybe the powers that be are planning a movie or something, and are holding back to books until they know they could command a higher price. Who knows?

If they did do a movie, I wonder who they could possibly get to fill Raymond Burr's shoes? He was nearly perfect; except in those early books, Mason sometimes got physical with the bad guys—something I could never envision Burr doing.

Chandler is fine, but he never wrote anything as good as 'The Maltese Falcon'. Hammett was the master.

(BTW, virtually *all* the lines in the film come straight out of the book. You can hold it open while watching the film and follow the text, almost as if you were to have the script to Hamlet on your knees at the Old Vic).

as story and lines yes, I concur. 'The Maltese Falcon' has a dry effectiveness that is unique. But the other things of Hammett are poorer, while all the work of Chandler is very well crafted.

Hammett was indeed the parent, the inspirer. Our local followers, among whom Rock Lobster is not the least talented, could have their say about this point.

Hammet versus Chandler in 6 rounds. Fine match.

As a movie it is a great movie. IMBD viewers places it at the 87th place. But that is not a reliable estimate of the value of the film. The same list has Inception at the 3rd place (!?)and Fargo at the 119th . Which demontrates that de gustibus not disputandum (est).

John Houston directed and scripted it. The cast was is not stellar, but very interesting.

All new popular film end up high on the list, which really reflects popularity more than quality. In a year or two, Inception's position on the list will be more realistic.

That one will have to wait to come on satellite. If I find the way, I would like to see The concert that is now showing.

Bogart, Mary Astor, and the wonderful Peter Lorre, not stellar! Mind you, I suppose you are spoiled by Italian actors.
