Lightbulb Cybook Opus Review by eBouquin.fr

eBouquin.fr, the first french website dedicated to ebooks and ebook readers, publishes a full review of the Cybook Opus.

One of the firsts 5 inches readers and certainly the Christmas Gift of the year.

Here the review in French:
http://www.ebouquin.fr/2009/08/19/te...ique-de-poche/

And there in English with the Google Translator:

The reset button is located next to the battery. However, Bookeen team has thought about programming a key combination for a complete restart: No need to open the reader and have a paperclip handy to restart the machine. However, crashes are extremely rare on the Opus. It is the most stable device we've tested.
That's interesting. The thing that worries me the most about getting the Opus is the crashes/freezing reporting by many users.

The accelerometer seems like a good idea; changes from portrait to landscape upon turning the device (like ipod nano does).

The main use for this is not switching from portrait to landscape, but turning the device upside-down for left-handed use. If you look at the picture, you'll see that the main page-turn buttons are the two long, thin buttons to the right of the screen - ideal for right-handed use. If you're left-handed, you just turn the Opus upside-down; the screen inverts, and the page-turn buttons are now to the left of the screen.

Something else I noticed while researching the Opus is that reviews are few and far between. Those few coming from the US are just commentary on the features of the device (without actual usage) and seem to be widely pro-Kindle orientated.

I own and use an Opus. Over all, I'm very happy with it. But the claim that it does not crash often is rubbish. I have had many opportunities to use the reset key combination.

They are now shipping with a new firmware version which supposedly fixes the ePub crashing issue.

Are you using a SD card ?

I think there are two distinct crash issues. With one the device can be reset with the key combo with the second the unit is totally unresponsive and must be reset via the reset button under the battery cover.

I've never experienced the first. All of my freeze/crashes have required removal of the battery cover to resolve. The unit just seems to die completely. If plugged into USB while 'dead' it acts like the unit is turned off (red charging light comes on). Sometimes I can go for days without it happening and other times it happens every 20-40 minutes.

I don't use an SD card, and all of my crashes have been resolvable by the key-combo. Like Oak above, there is no obvious pattern to the crashes - could be three in an hour, or three in a week. So it's irritating more than critical.

Harry - I have had my Opus for less than a month. Perhaps there's been a new release since then; who knows.

Over all, though, I do want to be clear that I'm very happy with my Opus, and if I were to buy a new eReader now, it would still be my choice.

From what I read a hard reset is only necessary if you have a SD card in place.

If you have an SD in the key combo won't work for crashes where the key combo works. For the type I'm having it doesn't matter if there's an SD or not you have to use the reset on the back. It's been the same for both the unit I returned and my replacement.

How much do you read ? Seams an awful lot of crash. Kind of what I had when i was still using the SD. Maybe you should ran a check on the internal memory.
Mine didn't crash a while, well, did this week end, but that was because I finally managed to empty the battery.

Is this new firmware available to people who purchased an Opus with the original firmware? If not, I say stay far far away from Bookeen.
