Scribd to enter the ebook market

http://www.bigmouthmedia.com/live/ar...ket-.asp/5912/

...
Although when Scribd launched, the company's focus was entirely on advertising, the recent growth of the ebook market - as well as ebook readers such as Amazon's kindle - have given the company another opportunity to increase profits.

While Amazon may be responsible for developing the ebook market for Scribd, it won't be getting anything back. Scribd's decision to allow authors to sell ebooks at any price they want - and only take 20% of the sale - means the document-sharing site can easily undercut Amazon.

The TimesOnline gives an example of San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller Kemble Scott who has made the decision to sell his latest book for only $2 on Scribd. While the $1.60 he earns from this may not seem like a lot, it is more than the estimated $1.13 he made per sale on "SoMa", his first book which was on sale for $15.

Publishers moving to Scribd include technology publishers O'Reilly Media who have made 650 of their popular ebooks available for sale within the Scribd store as well as other mainstream publishers such as Random House and Simon & Schuster.
...

I think Scribd can be as popular as youtube in case if they will add DRM free ePub format and will sell Bestsellers for only $2

Scribd still contains copyrighted material and should be avoided unless and/or until they remove all copyrighted books and other copyrighted media from their hosted website.

Of course, there is also material there that is NOT copyrighted.

I think you mean, material that is copyrighted that is available there WITHOUT PERMISSION.

The current problems with Scribd are two: first, that ePub is not an offered format, which means that one has to buy either a PDF (especially if the book is DRMed) or a a format to convert to an ebook format, something most people are either unwilling to do or incapable of doing;

and second, that there is no good way to separate the good books from the ones that are so bad that even your garbage can would vote to reject them.

Things will improve in terms of fining "good" as opposed to "garbage" when a search is limited to a known publisher or author, but then we are back to the original format problems. Will the books be available in ePub or in customized formats, or just PDF? Will Random House go DRM-free?

Exactly. A lot of publishers and authors are using it to post freebies now.
