Free/Bargain Suspense/Mystery/Thriller February 2013

Everyone is welcome to post their finds here. Please do a search before posting to avoid duplication, and please try not to post self-pubs. Thanks.

Books listed in my posts are from Amazon US unless otherwise indicated.

One of today's Kindle Daily Deals is A Suspension of Mercy by Patricia Highsmith for $1.99.

Quote:
A major new reissue of the work of a classic noir novelist.

With the acclaim for The Talented Mr. Ripley, more film projects in production, and two biographies forthcoming, expatriate legend Patricia Highsmith would be shocked to see that she has finally arrived in her homeland. Throughout her career, Highsmith brought a keen literary eye and a genius for plumbing the psychopathic mind to more than thirty works of fiction, unparalleled in their placid deviousness and sardonic humor. With deadpan accuracy, she delighted in creating true sociopaths in the guise of the everyday man or woman. Now, one of her finest works is again in print: A Suspension of Mercy, a masterpiece of noir fantasy. With this novel, Highsmith revels in eliciting the unsettling psychological forces that lurk beneath the surface of everyday contemporary life.
From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Television scriptwriter Sidney Bartleby, who specialises in murder mysteries, daydreams about killing his wife, Alicia, as a way of drawing inspiration for his stories. However, when she unexpectedly takes a long holiday away from him, he begins wondering whether he could ever put his plan into action.

The new list of 100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less is up.

Mysteries & Thrillers.

Of note, I can personally recommend Ruth Rendell's The Crocodile Bird for $3.99.

Quote:
A young woman, sheltered from the outside world, comes to terms with her deluded, murderous mother—and what she must do to survive

When the police come to the door at the gatehouse of a remote British estate, sixteen-year-old Liza and her mother know that their lives are about to change forever. After all, Liza watched her mother kill a man—well, more than just one. Having lived as a virtual hermit on the estate, Liza knows nothing of the outside world, but she sets off to find her way with the help of a newly won lover. As she learns about those around her, she begins to discover herself—and just how alike she and her mother might be.

Rendell carefully unravels this tale of an obsessive bond between mother and daughter and of hope for a new life in a strange land.

On Amazon US, from Oceanview Publishing:

EDIT: NOT FREE, $2.99 - sorry for any confusion

Collateral Damage: A Matt Royal Mystery by H. Terrell Griffin

From Booklist
Matt Royal, a fiftysomething retired lawyer living in Florida, jumps in with both feet when an old army buddy (they served together in Vietnam) asks him to find out who murdered his son. But what do the apparently unrelated deaths of some people on board a cruise boat have to do with the case? Not to mention another murder, way off in North Dakota. Matt is an easygoing narrator; he tries to keep his lifestyle laid back, to match that of the Florida beach community where he lives, but it’s tricky when his old instincts kick in, and he’s back in crime-solving mode. Comparisons to John D. MacDonald’s Travis McGee novels are natural, but it’s worth noting that the Matt Royal novels also fit comfortably on the shelf among the thrillers of Lescroart, Margolin, and Grippando. --David Pitt

Free mystery today from Bethany House, a Christian publisher: Back On Murder by J. Mark Bertrand. It has many excellent ratings at both Goodreads and Amazon, as well as a promise of no preachy overtones.

Thriller Phase Four by Gary Carson $.99 from Blasted Heath.

Quote:
If you’re a fan of fast-paced high-concept action thrillers – Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, Matthew Reilly – you’ll love this. Phase Four is part techno thriller, part adventure story, part conspiracy theory – and all action all the way.

The plot…

When a classified military convoy transporting nerve gas is hijacked in the Nevada desert by a group of Middle Eastern terrorists, Homeland Security investigator Matthew Drake is assigned to put the suspects under surveillance.

But when the gas is released inside a luxury high-rise hotel in an apparent attempt to assassinate the President, Drake realizes – too late – that the hijackers weren't terrorists, the convoy wasn't carrying nerve gas, and something is very wrong in Washington D.C.

Now mobs are rioting in the Bay Area and panic is spreading across California at a frightening speed, threatening to engulf the entire country.

On the run with disgraced CIA surveillance technician Gena Hahn, Drake struggles to contain a sinister plan to achieve total control over the human mind.
Quote:
From the author…

“It also has some similarities with zombie novels.”
Okay...

True Detective (a Nathan Heller novel) by Max Allan Collins is $2.99
http://www.amazon.com/Detective-Nath.../dp/B0054LXWYQ

I think this is the first of the Nathan Heller series, for which Collins won a Shamus award. The series is set in the 1930's, and feature a blend of detailed and seemingly accurate history of the organized crime of the period with a fictional detective. Well done, if it's your cup of tea. Although I eventually grew tired of the series, I really enjoyed the first several I read. (To be clear, I do think the writing quality remains excellent on the later books, just not quite my preferred style.)

Mortal Sin, by Paul Levine is $0.99
http://www.amazon.com/MORTAL-Jake-La.../dp/B0042X991C

This was free a couple of times early last year, but it's quite enjoyable if you missed it.
from Library Journal
"Lawyer Jake Lassiter is defending Florida real estate developer Nicky Florio in a civil suit regarding an environmentalist's death at a poolside party. ... (Lassiter) ...finds himself witness to a beheading, accused of embezzlement and murder, and on the run. Indian rights, animal rights, and slimy politicians and lawyers all surface in this fourth Lassiter novel. Permeated with cynicism and the corruption of South Florida that recall the work of Carl Hiaasen, this thriller races to a smashing climax."

Free thriller from Endeavor Press: Operation Herod by Andrew Cartmel.

Quote:
Meet Rupert Hood. Every day, he joins the sweaty commuters travelling to Putney, in south-west London, where he has a seemingly dull job as an estate agent.

But this property company is not what it seems. And neither is Rupert.

It is a front - for the UK's intelligence service.

When a series of deadly terror strikes begin, Rupert swings into action.

But he faces a test as challenging and deadly as any in his career.

The terror plot leads not to al-Qaeda, or any other known threat. It leads to Big Mama, a former sex worker who built up her own criminal empire in Thailand before going global.

But Big Mama is a woman with a grudge - and not just against the pimps and sex traffickers who ruined her youth.

And as Rupert is about to discover, Operation Herod is a threat to all mankind.

Quote:
Leo Desalvo, a loving husband and father is dead. It appears he committed suicide, but nothing could be further from the truth. And Leo’s wife knows it. Not only is it her livelihood, but she’s caring for her father. She hopes the garage will lure him out of his self-imposed exile and back to the world of cars he once loved. But new competition, and the death of her best customer, auto dealer Leo Desalvo, leave her struggling. When Joe approaches Sally to appraise his father’s rare, classic sports car, she welcomes the business. There’s something fishy about the car, however, and Sally is beginning to suspect shady dealings in Leo’s business. Is Joe involved too? When her long-time friend and employee is murdered, Sally realizes it’s too late to back out of the investigation she’s inadvertently stumbled into. And it seems it’s too late for her heart as well.

Two mysteries for today's Kindle Daily Deals for $1.99 each.

House of Evidence by Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson from Amazon Crossing.

Quote:
On a cold January morning in 1973, inside a stately old house in Reykjavik, blood pools around Jacob Kieler Junior from a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. Detective Jóhann Pálsson, an expert in the emerging field of forensics, is called to the scene and soon discovers something more unsettling than the murder itself: the deceased’s father, Jacob Kieler Senior, a railroad engineer, was shot to death in the same living room nearly thirty years earlier. The case was officially closed as a botched robbery.

Pálsson soon uncovers diaries that portray Kieler Senior as an ambitious man dedicated to bringing the railroad to Iceland no matter the cost. Sensing a deeper and darker mystery afoot, the detective and his colleagues piece together through the elder Kieler’s diaries a family history rich with deceit…
Paranormal mystery - Murder in Vein by Sue Ann Jaffarian from Midnight Ink.

Quote:
The sight of the blood covered fangs exploded from her deep memory like a ball through a plate glass window. The man had bitten Bobby, torn into him like a barbequed rib on the Fourth of July.

Vampires. Vam-pires. Real live—er, dead (undead?)—bloodsucking vampires, living in the City of Angels. Madison Rose, a street-smart twenty-something waitress would never have believed it—until a vampire thwarts a vicious attack against her by appearing in the nick of time and finishing off her assailant in one tasty bite.

Madison has been saved by the vampires—or has she? She learns that women have been going missing; their lifeless bodies turning up drained of blood. Now the murderer is after her. As the violence escalates, Madison, LAPD Detective Notchey, and a cadre of alluring and dangerous vampires search for the true killer—while Madison keeps a wary eye on the skittish and thirsty vampires. Will she survive to see the light of day?

Murder in Exile by Vincent O'Neil is $.99. Originally published by Macmillan in 2006. First book in his Frank Cole series.

Quote:
Frank Cole is laying low in the Panhandle of sunny Florida, working as a fact-checker for an insurance company while he awaits an appeal. The job doesn't offer much responsibility, which is exactly what he wants. Plus, it manages to keep his analytical mind busy so that he's not obsessing over his uncertain future. It seems like a nice setup for the time being, but things don't go as planned.

Eddie Gonzalez, a young man who only recently bought life insurance, is killed in a hit-and-run accident. The insurance company hires Frank to look into Eddie's life. Frank thinks the company is just trying to get out of paying the money and he sets out to prove the legitimacy of the claim. In doing so, he manages to ruffle the feathers of Dennis Dannon, the chief of police and a friend of the Gonzalez family, and to bring threats down upon his own head. As Frank looks further into the case, it becomes clear that Eddie's death was not an accident, and that the killers actually had another target in mind.

Vincent H. O'Neil makes a stunning debut with this first mystery, the winner of the Malice Domestic Contest. With a likable sleuth and top-notch plotting, Murder in Exile is a welcome and exciting addition to the genre.

Free from Endeavor Press: Dead Money by Rodney Hobson.

Quote:
Killiney Court is a secure, heavily-guarded and recently refurbished block of luxury flats, home to a host of quiet and respectable tenants in the midst of peaceful Lincolnshire.

But one day the security of the community is shattered.

Ray Jones is horrifically murdered in the middle of the night.

Who killed him? And how?

The block has round-the-clock security, and there are no signs of forced entry.
Detective Inspector Paul Amos believes that can only mean one thing. The murderer must be a resident of Killiney Court.

Yet all is not as it seems.

Ray Jones is a businessman who has collected countless enemies from a lifetime of wheeling and dealing; with such a lengthy list of enemies, finding the murderer seems impossible.

But Amos is a detective who never gives up.

As he delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers that money is never dead - but that people will sometimes kill for it.

'Dead Money' is a gripping murder mystery novel that will keep you hooked until the very last page. It brilliantly combines the suspense and character of the traditional masters of the British detective story such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie with the grittier story-telling of modern writers such as Peter James, Peter Robinson and Ian Rankin.
