Money Talks: B&N carries Amazon pbooks

http://paidcontent.org/2012/10/01/de...les-in-stores/

Quote:
In February, Barnes & Noble said it wouldn’t carry Amazon Publishing titles in its stores. ”Our decision is based on Amazon’s continued push for exclusivity with publishers, agents and the authors they represent,” B&N chief merchandising officer Jaime Carey said in a statement at the time. Over half a year later, Amazon’s push for exclusive content continues, but it appears Barnes & Noble has capitulated: The nation’s largest bookstore chain is carrying books from Amazon’s New York-based imprint in its stores, despite the fact that it isn’t selling those titles as ebooks.
I'm seeing reports from both coasts, so it's not just a Manhattan thing.

No shock that the moment Amazon actually published a book worth stocking, all of B&N's high-fallutin' "principles" went overboard. No reason to let "principle" get in the way of making money.

Of course, B&N's "boycott" did draw a bunch of indies who swore they wouldn't stock the books so now they have themselves a nice window of B&M *exclusivity*.

Looking at the Penny Marshall title I see it's in KDP Select. So, it's an Amazon exclusive for $9.99 (!) if you don't use one of your monthly free reads.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (who declared bankruptcy citing $3.5 billion debt (three times revenue!)) purchased the publishing and distribution rights to Amazon's east coast publishing arm. HMH created the New Harvest imprint and distribute through Ingram and B&T.

Of course, Amazon sells the hardcover almost $10 cheaper than B&N so it's possible they aren't expecting large in-store sales. (Bookscan says 2,000 HC were sold the first week. Kindle numbers higher.)

The book doesn't appear to be exclusive.
Kobo carries the ebook just fine:
http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/My-Mo...-HaLwrfPbQ&r=1

The pbook is list priced at US$26, the ebook is List Priced at US$14, and on sale for $9.99 at Amazon. I see it for $10.09 on Kobo.

B&N still swears they're *not* carrying Amazon books.
And good old Publisher's Weekly thinks it might be a glitch.
http://mhpbooks.com/no-means-yes-bar...-marshall-bio/

They might have an inventory control issue:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/my-m...=9780547892627

Maybe they'll try to recall the books sold and refund the money?

From today's MHP article, with a NSFW word in the title:

Quote:
Update, Barnes & Noble now recalling Amazon books from its stores: In a follow-up post, Laura Hazard Owen at PaidContent reports that “Barnes & Noble headquarters sent an email to its branches around the country telling them to pull the Amazon titles.” (In addition to Penny Marshall’s memoir, Own reports that the chain is carrying Jessica Valenti’s Why Have Kids?) She also gets a statement from Barnes & Noble, which flatly states that “Our policy has not changed. We are not carrying Amazon titles.”

Owen wonders if the glitch is “possibly because the company hadn’t stated its policy clearly enough to the stores and because local branches have always had a fair amount of latitude in choosing the titles they want to stock.” But given the scale of the problem—with books scattered throughout the country—I can only imagine the problem rests with Barnes & Noble headquarters.

The left foot doesn't know what the right foot is doing?
The original report had the Marshall book getting prominent treatment in most stores so this wasn't a case of a misplaced book or three slipping unto the back shelves.

This is getting fun.
If B&N HQ doesn't know what the local stores actually carry and how they promote it...

That is interesting. I had checked B&N, BoB, Sony and Google before my previous post and they didn't offer the ebook. I ignore Kobo since they don't accept Amex.

Anyway the latest updates state the the books will be removed from stores and returned to HMH. The local stores evidently have some latitude in purchasing inventory. And from the trade catalog there is no indication it's an Amazon book. It's only when you look inside the cover do you see evidence of its origin.

What I find amusing in *that* explanation is that the store managers, by the dozen, *independently* looked at the book and decided to put it front and center as a likely bestseller.
That is a pretty solid recommendation. I may have to buy the book now.

So again, the left and right foot kick B&N in the head. A lot of headaches with that kind of management and coordination.

Worse, that kind of inventory management is what got Borders (and the original CompUSA) into trouble.
Much as I enjoy see them with egg on their holier-than-thou face, the answer they're putting out there is on the scary side. One store doing stuff counter to policy is one thing; dozens is another...

Don't buy it!

Use one of your free monthly Amazon Prime reads

All copies (around 50) in my local library system are checked out. It must have general appeal. Of course, the same store managers also displayed front & center Snooki's latest

I don't have Prime.
What I buy from Amazon is never a rush so I just get by with the regular free shipping.
As for the book's appeal, Penny Marshal is a personality of enough substance and track record that even a ghost-written book should be worth reading.

Snooki's book had coop marketting money greasing the tables. Somehow I doubt HMH is doing coop marketing deals with individual B&N storefronts behind HQ's back. Of course, I *could* be wrong...

I suspect the problem B&N had is twofold: First, the books are distributed by Ingram and it is often the case that orders are automatically placed (at least that weas the case when I worked in the bookstores years ago) for "expected" bestsellers. Second, the publisher is not listed as Amazon but HMH, which also publishes thousands of books that are not from Amazon. I will not be surprised to see this repeat, that is, where B&N b&m stores stock an Amazon title for a few days until they get an e-mail from HQ saying to pull the titles.

As far as I am concerned, the culprit in the story is Amazon. B&N and others have said they would not carry the pbooks in the b&m stores as long as the ebook was not also available to them. All Amazon has to do is make the book available in any of its forms to everyone to sell, just like other publishers do.
