Hi,
I know that this thread is quite old, but the topic seems relevant, and is quite up in the google results. As of today (August 2016), is AZW3 the best format for the voyage?. I'm getting one in a couple of days and all my collection is in epub. Isn't KFX the best format for KV today?. Any tips to fine tune Calibre for best reading experience with KV?. Thanks! |

KFX can be generated by the KFX Output plugin for calibre, which requires you have Amazon's Kindle Previewer program installed.
Do you need the KFX-only features? KFX is still not understood very well (although there is basic read-only metadata support) and you cannot use it as a backup format. AZW3 basically does everything an ebook needs to do. |

Need, want, what is the difference?
If you are converting from EPUB anyway it is not much of a burden to install a plugin and convert to KFX instead of AZW3. So go right ahead, if it has features you need want. |

EPUB to AZW3 is basically a copy embedded. |

theducks -- the issue is that KFX switches on restricted features in the Kindle rendering engine... that is THE one an only reason people even mention the existence of KFX.
It is lossy, prerendered AZW3 with special features enable. |

Ok then, I'll try converting my epubs to KFX. Also I should try APXN generator (I believe Count Pages plugin does this too) and X-RAY Creator to get the "full amazon" experience? Or those are not really necessary?

"full Amazon" experience? I prefer to think of it as the "full Pyr0" experience -- assuming pseudo-random generated page numbers and X-Ray character mappings are things that you feel enhances your reading.
Allow me to repeat: Use whatever tools are available to enable or unlock features that you find useful.
