Alreader not showing images after editing ePUB with Sigil
Has anyone had this problem?
Whenever I edit an ePUB with any version of Sigil, AlReader2 does not recognize the images in the file. Doesn't matter what type - jpg or png - are not recognized at all. I suspect this is an issue with Sigil since the images will show in AlReader2 when the original unedited ePUB is loaded. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I haven't used AlReader2, so I can't speculate how that program handles things.
However, I haven't had the problem you mention. Then again, you do not mention your actions. So, in order for us to help you, please provide more information. 1. What do you change exactly in the ePUB 2. What are the references to the images in CodeView 3. What does the validation say |

Many readers are not fully compliant and require work arounds. Your image may be too large (file size) for your device. Your image may use a variant encoding that your device can't handle. (Just because a image is a JPG does not make it work) |

Sigil affecting images in AlReader2
Quote:
1. Simply inserted <br />s in chapter header eg. <h1 class="chapter" id="heading_id_2"><a id="page132"></a>CHAPTER TEN</h1> becomes <h1 class="chapter" id="heading_id_2"><a id="page132"></a><br /> <br /> CHAPTER TEN</h1> Even if throughout the entire file I insert only one <br /> enclosed in either a paragraph, division or header container, the images do not show in AlReader2. 2. Cover image <body style="margin-top: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; text-align: center; background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> <div class="cover"><img alt="cover" height="100%" src="../Images/Outside_Front_Cover.jpg" /></div> </body> </html> logo <p class="colophon"><img alt="logo" height="75" src="../Images/logo.jpg" width="111" /></p> 3. Validation says embedded fonts and one alternative image not used - if present. Doesn't matter since when remove fonts and this image, images still not showing in AlReader2. Seems that any changes will mess up the images. Note: The file was unDRM'd and the images showed up fine in AlReader2 after. It is only when I put it through Sigil that the problem happens. Thanks. I have used the exact same jpg images in an html file as a trial and AlReader2 will recognize them just fine so I don't think it is size or variant encoding unfortunately. |

Good to know that your reader likes the image.
Re doubling of <br /> I have never seen that, BUT, I always have visible text on both sides of the Break Inserting any <br />, anywhere, causes images to fail? |

I know it's really weird. If I simply open a decrypted ePUB that shows all the images in AlReader2 and simply insert one <br /> anywhere, then none of the images will show in that altered file with AlReader2. But I don't think it's the code itself that's the problem - I was simply using <br /> as an example modification. Any modification to the file seems to cause the problem. Another example is if I simply delete/replace one word in the file eg on the title page. Then the same thing happens! More trials. If I edit the ePUB by means other than Sigil eg. with tweak_epub, or by extracting the zip (ePUB) using 7-zip, modifying the html files in an editor and then dragging files back into the zip (ePUB) then the problem does not occur and the images show. Consequently, I'm tending to think that the problem lies with Sigil and not with AlReader2. Thanks again. Last edited by cerramadre; 08-19-2011 at 02:56 PM. |

Try opening the file in ADE. I suspect it will be visible there. If it is, it will be the AlReader2 program.

Yes I have seen double BR used before. But never with a non printing line on the beginning side of the cluster. I use Padding to manage space in those cases. I reserve BR to split printed lines <h3 class="chapno">Chapter 0 <br /><span class="chsubtitle">Nothing come from Nothing</span></h3> Now the Sigil TOC has both pieces and the chapter heading looks |

The file opens and shows images in ADE, Sony, Nook, FBReader, Firefox etc. Just not AlReader2. Also if I change the file extension from .epub to .zip, then AlReader2 will show the images because it is reading just html files and not an epub file. Must be in part some issue with how AlReader2 reads/renders? the epub extension itself and how Sigil repacks the epub after editing. If I edit the ePUB with eg tweak_epub the images will show in AlReader2, also if I extract with eg 7-zip, edit the htmls then drag back into 7-zip - not repack starting from mimetype.zip - then AlReader2 will show the images still. Sigil is definitely much easier to use than these methods. Thanks for helping me work through this everyone. Last edited by cerramadre; 08-19-2011 at 04:09 PM. |

Forget the <br />. It's not needed.
Code:
<h1 class="chapter" id="heading_id_2"><a id="page132"></a>CHAPTER TEN</h1> |

My guess is AllReader2 is unable to deal with the attribute order for items in the opf. When repackaging Sigil writes the attributes in alphabetical order. This is correct per the spec but not all readers like this. This is why covers don't work on the Nook.

Thanks for this suggestion. I will do some investigating on it. I love the Sigil interface and would love to continue using it.
