Anyway to save a web page as an RTF?

I think the ability of the Sony Reader to open to RTFs and text files has been woefully underemphasized in all the recent reviews. Its great to be able to buy books but I'm more excited by the ability to load content onto the reader that I want and not have to sit at a computer to read through a lengthy piece.

I want the ability to save long web articles to RTF. Is there a Firefox extension to save a page to RTF? Or a HTML to RTF conversion program? I have been doing this successfully with Acrobat Pro and also by opening saved sites in MS Word. Paperless Printer also works but it takes a long time. There should be a more direct way to do this from the browser.

Any suggestions?

If it's a long text article, I usually do a copy and paste into Word, which just takes a couple of seconds. Or (from Firefox) do a "Save - Web Page Complete" then open it in Word later and save it as an RTF.

If you're hitting the same site for content, check out RSS2Book:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7946

Your idea for a Firefox extension is great. Particularly if it was optimized for the Reader (e.g. letting you preset the font, size, etc. and giving you a box for title/author that pops up for during the save).

There's also the old Librie Printer floating around. It's kinda rudimentary, and you have to bang on it to get it to install without an actual Librie' attached to your PC, but the instructions and links are all posted around MobileRead somewhere. (rummage, rummage)

I'm using "HTMLtoRTF Converter Easy". It's GUI allows you to change all files in a folder from HTML to RTF and is quite fast, or just one file at a time.

the problem with most of these convert programs is that they cost money. the Firefox extension, in theory, would be free.

You can create a one-off entry in rss2book to do this; just make sure to click the 'Customize' button and then check the HTML checkbox under the URL field so that rss2book knows it is HTML and not RSS XML.

I'm curious, but didn't Sony state that the Reader could view HTML along with the other formats advertised? If that's the case, why not chose "Save Entire Page," copy that to your SD card, and view on the Reader? I personally haven't tried to view HTML on mine yet (too much other stuff to go through so far ), so maybe they overstated their capabilities.

Has anyone else tried to view HTML yet?

No, they didn't claim Reader can read HTML, and it doesn't. However, it shouldn't be too hard to add with a firmware update.

Perhaps the flat file system had something to do with their decision to not support HTML? If that's the case, they'd have to change the file system before they could do HTML support.

Actually, I destinctly remember reading on the SonyStyle website prior to the release, that the Reader supported HTML. After checking the box, however, I do see that it isn't listed. That kind of sucks, you'd think they'd at least convert it through the Connect software (though we all know how woefully inadequate that is). Also, here is a quote from the SonyStyle website about HTML:

"Formats natively supported
Adobe® PDF, JPEG, BBeB Book and plain text formats natively supported. HTML and other text formats require conversion using included software."

So I wasn't smoking crack after all. Thanks for the clarification.

Readerette Transferrer can do save a webpage to PDF (not RTF--it can as well but that is not in the current release) complete with images and HTML/CSS styles which is optimized for the Sony Reader. Give it a try! http://www.readerette.com.
