I am much indebted to Kovid for his overall excelent job. Calibre is the main reason why I chose to buy a 505 to replace my old 500. In fact, I think that Sony should express its gratitude to Kovid, perhaps by sending him a couple thousand dollars as an incentive. What about it, Sony? If you don't want to acknowledge that Kovid was able to do what you could not (i.e., write decent, useful software), you may send it anonymously...

epub epub epub
my vote for epub as the standard format.
I haven't recieved my BeBook (Hanlin V3) yet, but since LRF is a proprietary format, I know that as of now Calibre sadly won't be of much use for me. I love Calibre, especially the news feature (full articles from any RSS feed!!). With this in mind, I wish there was a feature to just press a button and have your feeds automatically downloaded (maybe there could be groups of feeds, e. g. "daily", "weekly" etc.). This isn't that important, though. Creating custom recipes is also a bit too complicated for a non-programmer like me, but I guess that lies in the nature of things... I fooled around with it but wasn't able to get the results I wanted. Wasn't able to exclude the scores of "side content" in the fetched articles (site navigation links, disclaimers etc.). Don't know if there's a way of making this easier and more intuitive (like clipmarks - another nice, but pretty useless web 2.0 tool). Anyway, I hope calibre will evolve from the "sony only" to "universal" soon! And I agree that Sony or some other company would be wise to secure Kovids knowledge for their eBook business. Just let us hope that that wouldn't be the end of Calibre! Cheers, jo. Last edited by jotheman; 06-16-2008 at 04:09 PM. Reason: grammar |

Calibre is just great. There are a few features I'd like to see added:
- Normalize format in library. epub is probably the most universal format. I think Calibre should have an option to normalize inputs to this format. - Auto convert on sync. If my device doesn't natively support a format, Calibre should dynamically convert it. - Sync on connect. Should be configurable (ex: collections --> device memory, others to sd card). I also agree with the auto-download of recipies. I think if it were exposed as a command line option, we could use our OS's native scheduler to run as we see fit. Thanks again for such a great app! - Ed |

That's great! I've put this into a script & added it to my scheduler:
PHP Code:
edit: Is it possible to add this to the library via the command line as well? Last edited by edembowski; 06-16-2008 at 09:12 AM. |

So far, there are two things that seem to stick out:
1. Standardize the library native format to ePub, then offer conversions to the various types so that the app can be used with multiple devices. 2. The automated news feed downloader Kovid, what would it take to get these two things done? |

@edembowski
You'd get better results with Code:

So you're saying you could get started with an initial deposit of $250? With a balance of $250?

I'd get started with the automated downloader for $250 (you should use a service like chipin to hold the funds until I deliver the feature).

Check your PayPal account for some more 'moral' support from me.
Obviously, ePub would be my priority, as I have no use for LRF at all. Cheers, jo. |

I've created a Chipin page for the automated downloader. I will work on another Chipin for the ePub support once we reach this milestone. Please contribute! Maybe we should spawn another thread?
Here is the Chipin link: http://calibre.chipin.com Last edited by astrodad; 06-16-2008 at 09:06 PM. Reason: Added link for chipin. my bad. |
