I am new here so, if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I apologize.

I am at version 3.27.1, on Windows 10. I am in Canada.
I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

Here is the log:

Spoiler:

Comments : <p>The international literary sensation, about a boy's quest through the secrets and shadows of postwar Barcelona for a mysterious author whose book has proved as dangerous to own as it is impossible to forget. </p>
<p>Barcelona, 1945 - just after the war, a great world city lies in shadow, nursing its wounds, and a boy named Daniel awakes on his eleventh birthday to find that he can no longer remember his mother’s face. To console his only child, Daniel’s widowed father, an antiquarian book dealer, initiates him into the secret of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a library tended by Barcelona’s guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world, waiting for someone who will care about them again. Daniel’s father coaxes him to choose a volume from the spiraling labyrinth of shelves, one that, it is said, will have a special meaning for him. And Daniel so loves the novel he selects, The Shadow of the Wind by one Julian Carax, that he sets out to find the rest of Carax’s work. To his shock, he discovers that someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book this author has written. In fact, he may have the last one in existence. Before Daniel knows it his seemingly innocent quest has opened a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets, an epic story of murder, magic, madness and doomed love. And before long he realizes that if he doesn’t find out the truth about Julian Carax, he and those closest to him will suffer horribly. </p>
<p>As with all astounding novels, The Shadow of the Wind sends the mind groping for comparisons—The Crimson Petal and the White? The novels of Arturo Pérez-Reverte? Of Victor Hugo? Love in the Time of Cholera?—but in the end, as with all astounding novels, no comparison can suffice. As one leading Spanish reviewer wrote, "The originality of Ruiz Zafón’s voice is bombproof and displays a diabolical talent. The Shadow of the Wind announces a phenomenon in Spanish literature." An uncannily absorbing historical mystery, a heart-piercing romance, and a moving homage to the mystical power of books, The Shadow of the Wind is a triumph of the storyteller’s art.</p>

Comments : Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the cemetery of lost books , a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out La Sombra del Viento by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from La Sombra del Viento, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax s work in order to burn them. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind. A page-turning exploration of obsession in literature and love, and the places that obsession can lead.

Comments : A stunning literary thriller in the tradition of Umberto Eco. The discovery of a forgotten book leads to a hunt for an elusive author who may or may not still be alive...Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out 'La Sombra del Viento' by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from La Sombra del Viento, a character who turns out to be the devil. This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax's work in order to burn them. <p>**</p><h3>From Publishers Weekly</h3>
<p>Ruiz Zafón's novel, a bestseller in his native Spain, takes the satanic touches from Angel Heart and stirs them into a bookish intrigue à la Foucault's Pendulum. The time is the 1950s; the place, Barcelona. Daniel Sempere, the son of a widowed bookstore owner, is 10 when he discovers a novel, The Shadow of the Wind, by Julián Carax. The novel is rare, the author obscure, and rumors tell of a horribly disfigured man who has been burning every copy he can find of Carax's novels. The man calls himself Laín Coubert-the name of the devil in one of Carax's novels. As he grows up, Daniel's fascination with the mysterious Carax links him to a blind femme fatale with a "porcelain gaze," Clara Barceló; another fan, a leftist jack-of-all-trades, Fermín Romero de Torres; his best friend's sister, the delectable Beatriz Aguilar; and, as he begins investigating the life and death of Carax, a cast of characters with secrets to hide. Officially, Carax's dead body was dumped in an alley in 1936. But discrepancies in this story surface. Meanwhile, Daniel and Fermín are being harried by a sadistic policeman, Carax's childhood friend. As Daniel's quest continues, frightening parallels between his own life and Carax's begin to emerge. Ruiz Zafón strives for a literary tone, and no scene goes by without its complement of florid, cute and inexact similes and metaphors (snow is "God's dandruff"; servants obey orders with "the efficiency and submissiveness of a body of well-trained insects"). Yet the colorful cast of characters, the gothic turns and the straining for effect only give the book the feel of para-literature or the Hollywood version of a great 19th-century novel. <br />

<h3>From Booklist</h3>
<p>Call it the "book book" genre: this international sensation (it has sold in more than 20 countries and been number one on the Spanish best-seller list), newly translated into English, has books and storytelling--and a single, physical book--at its heart. In post-World War II Barcelona, young Daniel is taken by his bookseller father to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a massive sanctuary where books are guarded from oblivion. Told to choose one book to protect, he selects <em>The Shadow of the Wind</em>, by Julian Carax. He reads it, loves it, and soon learns it is both very valuable and very much in danger because someone is determinedly burning every copy of every book written by the obscure Carax. To call this book--Zafon's <em>Shadow of the Wind</em>-- old-fashioned is to mean it in the best way. It's big, chock-full of unusual characters, and strong in its sense of place. Daniel's initiation into the mysteries of adulthood is given the same weight as the mystery of the book-burner. And the setting--Spain under Franco--injects an air of sobriety into some plot elements that might otherwise seem soap operatic. Part detective story, part boy's adventure, part romance, fantasy, and gothic horror, the intricate plot is urged on by extravagant foreshadowing and nail-nibbling tension. This is rich, lavish storytelling, very much in the tradition of Ross King's <em>Ex Libris</em> (2001). <em>Keir Graff</em><br />

Comments : <p>The internationally acclaimed, <em>New York Times</em> bestselling author returns to the magnificent universe he constructed in his bestselling novels <em>The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game,</em> and <em>The Prisoner of Heaven</em> in this riveting series finale—a heart-pounding thriller and nail-biting work of suspense which introduces a sexy, seductive new heroine whose investigation shines a light on the dark history of Franco’s Spain.</p>
<p>In this unforgettable final volume of Ruiz Zafón’s cycle of novels set in the universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, beautiful and enigmatic Alicia Gris, with the help of the Sempere family, uncovers one of the most shocking conspiracies in all Spanish history.</p>
<p>Nine-year-old Alicia lost her parents during the Spanish Civil War when the Nacionales (the fascists) savagely bombed Barcelona in 1938. Twenty years later, she still carries the emotional and physical scars of that violent and terrifying time. Weary of her work as an investigator for Spain’s secret police in Madrid, a job she has held for more than a decade, the twenty-nine-year old plans to move on. At the insistence of her boss, Leandro Montalvo, she remains to solve one last case: the mysterious disappearance of Spain’s Minister of Culture, Mauricio Valls.</p>
<p>With her partner, the intimidating policeman Juan Manuel Vargas, Alicia discovers a possible clue—a rare book by the author Victor Mataix hidden in Valls’ office in his Madrid mansion. Valls was the director of the notorious Montjuic Prison in Barcelona during World War II where several writers were imprisoned, including David Martín and Victor Mataix. Traveling to Barcelona on the trail of these writers, Alicia and Vargas meet with several booksellers, including Juan Sempere, who knew her parents.</p>
<p>As Alicia and Vargas come closer to finding Valls, they uncover a tangled web of kidnappings and murders tied to the Franco regime, whose corruption is more widespread and horrifying than anyone imagined. Alicia’s courageous and uncompromising search for the truth puts her life in peril. Only with the help of a circle of devoted friends will she emerge from the dark labyrinths of Barcelona and its history into the light of the future.</p>
<p>In this haunting new novel, Carlos Ruiz Zafón proves yet again that he is a masterful storyteller and pays homage to the world of books, to his ingenious creation of the Cemetery of Forgotten, and to that magical bridge between literature and our lives. </p>

You can go to Calibre Preferences - Plugins - Metadata source plugins - Amazon.com - customize plugin and choose a different country, could be Amazon has blocked you. Alternatively you could choose different servers to scrape the data.

Additionally you can add other metadata source plugins. If you review my log you'll see I have the following plugins downloading metadata

Barnes & Noble
Goodreads
Fantastic Fiction
Kobo Books
Google
Amazon.com
Overdrive

You can go to Calibre Preferences - Plugins - Get new plugins to add other sources for downloading metadata. These plugins are described in the Index of plugins sticky post at the top of the Plugins forum.

Good Luck.

Thank you for your reply.

1) Indeed, I appear to be running version 2.31.

PS C:\Users\Maria> calibredb --version
Qt: Untested Windows version 10.0 detected!
calibredb.exe (calibre 2.31 [64bit])

Also, in the Calibre window I am told "Update found: 3.27.1"
This leaves me confused, since I ran calibre-64bit-3.27.1.msi without any problems and when I try to run it again I get the options to Change - Repair - Remove, so the 3.27.1 seems to be installed. I am lost...

2) When it comes to the metadata sources:
- I am in Canada, but I do not have a choice of Amazon for Canada. I used the default (US) and it used to work - now it does not. I tried Germany and France - failure.
- I also tried Google by itself and Overdrive by itself - failure in both cases. the ISBN has a red "X" next to it.
- I will try to see about using a plugin and report back
Of course, the most frustrating thing is that it used to work and now it does'n, although I have changed nothing, just applied updates when told to
I am very grateful for any help you may continue to offer.

It looks almost as if you have two instances of calibre installed or the installation of 3.27.1 is being blocked.

When you look in Apps and Features, does it show only one instance of calibre installed? You can also try opening a command prompt and typing "where calibredb.exe" without the quotes and hit enter. This should return "C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibredb.exe" for the normal install. This does assume that the path to the calibre executables is in the system path variable.
Code:
C:\Users\David>where calibredb.exe
C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibredb.exe

C:\Users\David>where calibre.exe
C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre.exe

C:\Users\David>where where.exe
C:\Windows\System32\where.exe
If only one instance of calibre shows as installed, you may want to uninstall calibre which should not affect your library/plugins/etc. and then re-installing.

If I do, I can't find any trace of it. Not in Apps and Features, nor through cmd.
:\Users\Maria>where calibre.exe
:\Program files\Calibre2\calibre.exe

You maybe need admin rights. Start cmd with admin rights, type "set" or "path" and hit enter in the cmd window. You will get a report about your environment variables. Take a look to the "Path=" section. There should be an entry like
C:\Program Files\Calibre2\
or
C:\Program Files (86)\Calibre2\
for calibre if you have a local installation.

If not, you probably run a portable version with a linked program icon. You can right-click this link and look for its properties.

More testing. Tried to download (or re-download) metadata for some books that have been in my database for a while. Results were inconclusive: it worked for some, did not for others. Then I had to instal the latest Windows Updates (nothing special, just today's updates). Continued testing metadata download: miracle! Now it works for most those I tried and if not, repeating the attempt with only author's last name and one word of the title produced desired result!
How did that happen???

We don't believe in miracles, we just depend on them. Unwritten motto of many IT departments.

Did you uninstall calibre and then re-install it to see if this fixed your issues with the version not updating?

The results tell you there is at least one calibre 64 bit installation that you can uninstall or update (as we know already ).
As DNSB mentioned, you should really reinstall calibre. Download the actual installation from the official site https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows64
For the following action take care you user account have admin rights.
Uninstall calibre via control panel ->programs, boot your system (usually not needed but just in case...), make a new installation and allow all activities for calibre if there is a request from your security software.

----
By the way, there was going something with what DNSB mentioned to you. The command "where" should give you a result, as there is an active installation. Maybe a typo or a restricted user account. You can check this if you like. Copy this one in your cmd window with admin rights and hit enter:
where /F /T calibre*.*

This should show you all files with time stamp and locations starting with the name calibre (usually 8 files).

Thank you so much for all your help!
Yes, I shall reinstall Calibre, after uninstalling it and cleaning everything, including the registry.
In the meantime, this is the result of the "where" command:

Continuing saga

I went through the whole procedure of removing Calibre and cleaning.

- I removed existing Calibre (through Programs and Features)
- I ran CCleaner
- I cleaned the Registry (with CCleaner)
- I restarted my laptop
- I downloaded Calibre again (for Windows 10, 64 bit)

When I attempted to install Calibre again and I obtained the message :

"The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\calibre 64bit - E-book Management\calibre 64bit - E-book Management.lnk. "

I have never seen this message before aand I don't know what it means, so I stopped the installation.

- I manually removed all traces of Calbre (Registry, folders)
- I ran a quick anti-virus scan

I downloaded Calibre again rom the same page (https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows64), attempted to install it and got the same error message ("The installer has insufficient privileges ...). Cancelled the installation.

Downloaded Calibre again, but this time from https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows (so, I presume, it's 32 but?).
This version installed and loaded the Calibre Library without any problems.

I would appreciate any comments.
Thank you,
ML
