Why go on reading in a world without Douglas Adams?

Is there anyone out there who comes close?

There are others, but Adams and Pratchett are kinda in a class by themselves.

Thanks so much, folks! You've given me a lot to explore!

Since Terry Pratchett and Robert Rankin both have two nods each, I guess I'll be checking them out first!

Kudos to all!

There have been a number of posts about in what order to read the Pratchett books. The consensus did seem to be - start with the discworld novels and don't start with Eric or Monstrous Regiment. My personal favorites are Guards Guards, Wyrd Sisters and The Color of Magic/The Light Fantastic duology as starting places. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/p/terry-pratchett/

If your desire is for sore stomach and cheek muscles, and you enjoy witty and intelligent word-play, then I would like to recommend Robert Asprin's Myth series (even though he seemed to have run out of steam at around the seventh book).

Alas, Mr. Asprin has also passed on, just last year.

Responding, though, to the thread's title question: Optimism; there will be more. For proof that it will be that way (because it always has been), I submit Aristophanes' (446 - 386 BC) Lysistrata, and Apuleius' (2d century AD) The Golden Ass.

Read, Enjoy, and Take Heart.

Literature-map puts the aforementioned Terry Pratchett the closest to Adams, along with J.R.R. Tolkien.

I heartily endorse Pratchett & Asprin for the same light-hearted fun you find in Adams. Zelazny too.
IMHO Rankin is an acquired taste - darker, crueler, and cruder. I've tried several times, but not my cup of tea. Moore & Holt less so.
